Daily Report for Wed, Nov 26, 2008
With US Thanksgiving tomorrow, markets started winding down yesterday. Today is “Getaway Day” so the volume will be further reduced and on Friday the market is open only for three hours. This is a good time to take a break.
By the end of the day Tuesday, the DJIA (+36.08 +0.43% to 8479.47), S&P 500 (+5.58 +0.66% to 857.39) and NASDAQ Composite (-7.29 -0.50% to 1464.73) were unremarkable. Toronto Composite and Venture Board closed almost flat at 8442.86 and 719.96 respectively.
The Financials (XLF +5.8%) and Basic Materials (XLB +3.7%) were the leading sectors while Healthcare (XLV) and Consumer s
Staples (XLP) were laggards with a lift of well under +1.0% each.
In the Cara 100, the winners were BHP +14.5%, ABB +11.5% and TTM +11.4%. The losers were MBT -14.2%, ERTS -8.4%, RIMM -8.3% and SLW -8.2%.
The US long bond ($USB) gained +1.30% to 126.91 as yields dropped across the board.
$GOLD was largely unchanged at 820.50 (a 10 cents increase), while Crude Oil ($WTIC) dropped -$3.73/bbl to 50.77.
At 9:45am ET this morning, the spot precious metals markets were unremarkable, but higher than yesterday morning: gold 816.75; palladium 188; platinum 867; and silver 10.32.
Earlier in the day today, the Asia-Pacific equity markets were mixed. The Japanese Nikkei (-1.33% to 8313.2), and Australia (-2.68% to 3479.6) were lower. Hong Kong (+3.81% to 13369.5), Shanghai Composite (+0.49% to 1897.9) and India (+3.81% to 9026.7) traded higher.
Earlier in Europe (9:45am ET), the three main bourses were weak: French CAC was down -2.89%; the German DAX -2.28%; and the UK FTSE -2.22%.
I have been very busy and not able to keep up the blogging as before.
I expect not much to happen to markets. The DJIA is presently down a bit (-39 points) to 8440, but may trade a bit higher after the Obama introduction of Paul Volcker to his White House team. Good choice.
