Daily Report for Wed, Nov 12, 2008
Citi, Fannie and Freddie are names that were on trader’s lips yesterday as any existing bullish confidence waned. Prices sank across the board, for equities, oil and metals.
At the close, the DJIA (-176.58 -1.99% to 8693.96), the S&P 500 (-20.26 -2.20% to 898.95) and NASDAQ Composite (-35.84 -2.22% to 1580.90) were all down. The Toronto Composite lost (-264.8 -2.73% to 9424.00), and the Venture Board (-41.69 -4.56% to 872.33) dropped even more.
The best performing sector yesterday in NY was Utilities (XLU) and it was flat. Others like Basic Materials (XLB -44.0%), and Financials (XLF) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY) both down -3.5%, were the weakest.
Goldminers ($XAU -6.1%) were softest among industry groups. There were no notable winners. $GOLD dropped -$13.70/oz, and $WTIC crude oil dropped -$3.08/bbl to 59.33.
Earlier today, the Asia-Pacific markets were weak: Japan’s Nikkei 225 (-1.29% to 8695.5); India’s Sensex BSE 30 (-3.08% to 9536.3); Australia (-0.97% to 3883.6); Shanghai (+0.84% to 1859.1); and Hong Kong (-0.73% to 13939.1) ere for the most part negative.
In Europe late in the day today (10am ET), the equity markets are down as well: French CAC -1.84%; German DAX -1.64%; and UK FTSE -0.53%.
Spot prices at 10:15am ET today for gold, palladium, platinum and silver are, respectively: 724.55; 212; 825; and 9.62, which are down between -1.0% and -1.6%.
$WTIC crude oil futures are down to 57.59/bbl.
DJIA futures are at 8502, while the 10:20am reading for the DJIA is 8481 (-2.44%).
Comments & Outlook
Sorry to be late, but other duties called.
Markets are under pressure, largely I think because the bankers are waiting to see the policies of the new Treasury, SEC and how Congress will react to the Fed’s continued decision-making. The economic stimulus packages being discussed by politicians are one thing, but this will pass. Of far greater interest to the bankers is how many doors and which ones will be open to their lobbyists under an Obama presidency.
If the President-elect were to list to me, he would turf Paulson and Cox now (by giving notice) and name the new team. He would make a statement that he intends to look into the actions of the Fed and their Wall Street banks. He would announce that he will reverse any executive orders intending to protect any of these people from prosecution. He will demand to know why Paulson went to the Far East during the Bear Stearns fiasco, and how JP Morgan got off the hook with the debts owing to them from a Bear Stearns suddenly declared bankruptcy (were records back-dated?), and he will investigate the massive purchase of put options in these broker-dealers before they drowned.
The truth will out, and the people will not let the new President off the hook if he allows the culprits to multi-trillion dollar fraud get off the hook. Reel them in Mr. President; you have the world looking over your shoulder. If you don’t, I dare say the market will make you walk the plank.
