Daily Report for Wed, Nov 05, 2008
Lower bank earnings including losses in many, reported today across Europe, pushed equity prices down. The Euro weakened against the $USD and commodity prices, including gold and oil, were under pressure this morning, as they have been since noon yesterday. But about 7:00am ET even that picture changed.
Yesterday in North American markets, there was no volume to speak of, but there were positive signs early on. The Crude Oil ($WTIC) price jumped +$6.62/bbl (+10.4%) to 70.53. $GOLD lifted +$30.50/oz to 757.30. Equity prices and bond prices followed.
The DJIA (+305.45 +3.28% to 9625.28), S&P 500 (+39.45 +4.08% to 1005.75), and NASDAQ Composite (+53.79 +3.12% to 1780.12) were strong all day. So too were the Toronto Composite (+395.32 +4.07% to 10116.58), and the Venture Board (+39.68 +4.24% to 975.27).
Early on today, perhaps spurred by the victory by President-elect Barack Obama, Asia-Pacific equity markets found a bounce. Later in the session, however, there was no follow-through. In trading on European bourses at 6:30am ET, markets were all down more than -2%. US equity futures indicated a weak opening too.
Tomorrow, the Bank of England (7:00am ET) and European Central Bank (7:45am ET) announce their monetary policy decisions. Lower rates ought to weaken the Pound and Euro in USD terms. The spate of weak quarterly reports from bankers there today supports the view that monetary policy will be accommodative, hence the strength in the USD.
After the close of Asia-Pacific markets today, Japan’s Nikkei 225 (+4.46% to 9521.2); India’s Sensex BSE 30 (-4.81% to 10120.0); Australia (+2.82% to 4287.3); Shanghai (+3.16% to 1760.6); and Hong Kong (+3.17% to 14840.2), were mixed, but mostly bullish.
In New York yesterday, most sectors were strong: Energy (XLE +6.4%), Financials (XLF +5.6%), Basic Materials (XLB +4.7%), and Industrials (XLI +4.4%). Even the laggards were strong: Healthcare (XLV +1.3%), Staples (XLP +1.5%) and Utilities (XLU +1.9%).
Among industry groups, the strongest were Goldminers ($XAU +14.8%) and Oil Services ($OSX +10.1%). Hospitals ($RXH -3.8%) were weak.
For the Cara 100, the big winners were: VIP +21.4%, SLW +21.1%, GG +18.4%, and DB +18.3%. My securities advisory company is working on a detailed report on Goldcorp. Of the 6 losers on the day, only AET (-5.7%) was notable.
The long bond ($USB) rallied sharply by +1.60% to 115.36 as bond yields dropped across the board. The T-Bill yield lifted a bit to 0.465%.
The $USD plunged in the early morning yesterday, closing down -1.92% to 84.59, which served as a powerful uplift for oil and gold prices. Crude Oil ($WTIC +$6.62/bbl +10.4% to 70.53) and $GOLD (+$30.50/oz +4.2% to 757.30) were very strong – until 12 noon ET.
The Euro (+3.13% to 129.97), Pound (+1.11% to 159.62) and Cdn Loonie (+2.56% to 87.03) skyrocketed. The Australian Dollar was up +3.43% on the day. The Yen dropped -0.47% to 100.35.
In futures trading at 7:30am ET this morning, the $USD has dropped from an earlier high of 86.14 to 85.44. There was a rapid decline about 7am ET. The Euro is up to 129.26.
Crude Oil is back up to 69.00/bbl this morning. $GOLD is now stronger after being weak most of the evening. Spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver at 7:40am ET were: 760.81, 214, 877, and 10.26, respectively. There is nervous trading ahead of the European/UK monetary policy decisions tomorrow. Moreover, traders are looking forward to see how the New Economic Order will be put in place by his choice for key roles in the Administration.
The DJIA futures have improved in the past hour and are now down -65 to 9522.
Comments & Outlook
In the WIR this past weekend, I gave you a heads-up re Teck Corp (TCK).
A week ago I wrote, “I cannot see either the base metals like copper or the precious metals soaring without some preliminary warming up in the Xstrata, Vale (RIO) and Teck (TCK), which I use as a tell. These are the companies that understand forex and credit markets as well as anybody. Their goods are sold by Letters of Credit. It’s a tough time for them.”This week things improved. The RIO soared +25.0%, but the TCK gained just +2.4%. However, the Rio Tinto (RTP +26.3%) and BHP (BHP +25.2%) also soared. The movers are all much bigger than Teck. I suspect the TCK under-performed because the Toronto index under-performed this week. Let’s watch TCK next week.
Xtrata (XTA.L) trading in London was up +35.7% this week – just flying on Wednesday through Friday. Wow. Metals are on fire. TCK to follow next week!
TCK closed today at US$12.54. When I wrote “TCK to follow next week!” the stock was $9.81. What followed has been a two-day gain of +27.8%.
Internally, the market had surged +10% on the 28th right before we put on eight bull spreads. No one could accuse us of cherry picking a situation to boost results (the VIX had dropped -20% on the 28th prior to us selling premium).
The results, within our managed risk strategy, were: PBR +27.7%, SU +1,550%, GG +3,200%, BHP +139%, RIO >+3,700%, TCK +88%, RIMM -12.84%, and GOOG >+200%. The Google option spread was put on for 1 dollar credit and gained by 2.10 in price.
Not bad!
My intention here is to show that Cara Trading Advisors manages portfolios via sophisticated and timely strategies and tactics. What I write as a blogger for the Cara Community is day and night different from my trading.
I trade for profit, but I blog to educate and inform. Then you can learn how to trade with a higher probability of success.
