Daily Report for Tue, Nov 25, 2008
Yesterday was rally day in the US equity market. It started on Friday. The rally, which has come with higher volume, is likely to last through the Obama inauguration. Then the 4Q08 earnings will be reported and there will be a testing of the market strength. But, not until then, I believe.
By the end of the day, the DJIA (+396.97 +4.93% to 8443.39), S&P 500 (+51.78 +6.47% to 851.81) and NASDAQ Composite (+87.67 +6.33% to 1472.02) set more records. The gain in the DJIA index is +900 points in two days.
All sectors, all industries and 94 of the Cara 100 closed higher. There were fewer 52-week lows.
The leading sectors were the Financials (XLF +15.2%), Consumer Discretionary (XLY +7.9%) and Energy (XLE +7.2%).
In Canada, the Toronto Composite jumped +285.48 +3.50% to 8440.87, while the Venture Board was up less, +18.62 +2.64% to 722.29.
The Cara 100 big winners were: MBT +28.0%, BC +26.9%, and DB +24.8%. Maybe we can expect a Brunswick Corp to do that; but Deutsche Bank? Wow!
The US long bond ($USB) lost -0.80% to 125.28. The yield is at 3.755%.
On the forex front, the $USD plunged -2.20% to 85.87. The Euro was up +2.83% to 1.2945. The Pound (+1.66% to 151.80) and the Loonie (+2.71% to 81.09) were huge winners, while the Yen (-1.34% to 102.86) was the big loser, again.
$WTIC (Crude Oil) gained +$4.57/bbl to 54.50. As I reported on Saturday, “… but that market will lift substantially on Monday as capital flows back into equities and commodities and out of cash and bonds”.
Earlier in the day today, the Asia-Pacific equity markets were higher except for the Shanghai Composite (-0.44% to 1888.7). The Japanese Nikkei (+5.22% to 8323.9), Hong Kong (+3.38% to 12878.6), and Australia (+5.51% to 3575.4) were solidly higher. India (-2.33% to 8695.5) traded down. Banks and beneficiaries of higher commodities were strong – like they were on Friday.
Earlier in Europe (9:40am ET vs 7:15am), the French CAC was up +2.01% (1.33%); the German DAX +1.51% (+0.75%); and UK FTSE +1.49% (+1.43%) were strong. The banks are liking the new US facility set up to buy in bad car and student loans and all.
Those markets were 7:10am ET, crushed on Friday, However I reported on Saturday, “But those markets closed well before the Geithner to Treasury rumor/announcement. They should open with a flourish on Monday.”
I wrote in Friday’s Daily Report, “Yesterday in Seeking Alpha and here in the blog I gave the Trade of the Generation re sell bonds and buy gold/goldminers. Gold was 735.20 at the time, so it’s already up +33.00/oz.” On Friday, Spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver closed the week at 799.50, 182, 824, and 9.64 respectively. Gold was the best performer over the past few days.
This morning at 9:40am ET, the near futures for gold, palladium, platinum and silver (vs 7:10am spot prices), 823.2 (810.92), 195.8 (195), 866.4 (860) and 10.35 (10.25) respectively. The Trade of the Generation call is looking rather accurate, but these prices will side-track, then boom, then side-track, then boom, I expect.
The DJIA futures closed the week at 8034. At 7:10am ET they had moved to 8448, now (9:45am) at 8537.
January Crude Oil closed Friday at 50.75, but jumped yesterday to 54.50, are now 53.45 after being down at 52.91 at 7:10am.
The Euro closed Friday at 125.00 and yesterday at 129.45. Then at 7:15am dropped to 128.58 before rebounding to 130.30. The $USD has sunk from 86.265 at 7:15am to 85.13. The precious metals will rally on this move.
Comments & Outlook
Yes, we live in interesting times. Did you see the number of Buy Alerts from yesterday and Friday. Wow! That's what happens when the DJIA jumps +900 points in two days. It's the Obama Bump. Now that's the kind of "Change" people were looking for. Something to talk about over the Thanksgiving Day dinner table.
No further comment today other than maybe Silver Wheaton (SLW) is going to be ok once the backroom boys decide who is going to take control and issue themselves all kinds of warrants and options. Watch for it. I know how these guys play the game. It’s all for them. If I were the Canadian Securities Administrators, I would be sending in the team of investigators. Between Teck (TCK) and Silver Wheaton (SLW), they wouldn’t have to walk more than a few steps in downtown Vancouver.
