Daily Report for Sat, Nov 01, 2008
Friday was interesting in that the Financials strengthened and led the market higher into the close. But this was the worst October on record for equity and commodity prices. Bonds too were trashed. People will be shocked at the losses in their end of the month portfolio statements.
Yesterday in the international markets, there was a broad based sell-off. Particularly hard hit were Japan (-5.0% to 8577.0) and Hong Kong (-2.5% to 13968.7). The UK FTSE, French CAC and German DAX closed down between -2.0% and -2.4%.
In New York, markets closed higher for the second day in a row and third in five. The DJIA +144.32 +1.57% to 9325.01), S&P 500 (+14.66 +1.54% to 968.75), and NASDAQ Composite (+22.43 +1.32% to 1720.95) reflected an all-day rally. But, once again, “there have been some pretty strange end-of-day market moves for the past week in NY”. The last 90 minutes was particularly volatile as Bulls and Bears fought for control.
Yesterday, the Toronto Composite dropped -93.5 -0.95% to 9762.76, while the Venture Board lifted again for the third day in a row, gaining +35.55 +4.04% to 915.30.
The best performing sector ETF in NY was Financial (XLF +4.9%), while the worst was Utilities (XLU -2.7%).
Among industry groups, the Airlines ($XAL +6.6%), for back-to-back big days, and REITs ($DJR +6.6%) and Broker-Dealers ($XBD +6.3%). Goldminers ($XAU -5.0%) were one of the only losers on the day, but the week was a good one there.
$GOLD dropped down -$16.20/oz to 722.30 at the close of futures trading, after falling overnight. The spot market was quiet through the day, closing Friday at 724.70/oz, unchanged from Thursday morning.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) closed down -$1.16/bbl at 64.80.
For shares of Cara 100 companies, there was continuing spectacular volatility but low volume during the session. The winners were TTM +37.6%, TGP +14.7%, and JCP +11.3%. The losers were ERTS -17.9%, KB -12.0%, CCL -11.5% and NOK -8.6%.
Regulators ought to be checking for possible front-running because these stocks (of large cap high-quality corporations) should not be trading up and down by +15% to +40% in a day. The system has long ago stopped being a value discovery mechanism, but this volatility and the weird closes each day shows me that the capital markets are being gamed by insiders. The public is losing or has already lost confidence in properly functioning markets. They want to know where the SEC is in this matter.
The $USD (+1.05% to 85.67) was very strong on the day, while the $XEU (-1.47% to 127.55) and $XBP (-2.24% to 160.98) were crushed. The Yen (-0.10% to 101.33) and $CDW (-0.31% to 82.40) were down a bit.
The US long bond ($USB -1.04% to 113.12) was hammered as yields lifted again. Six sessions ago, $USB closed at 117.95.
On Friday, the US T-Bill yield moved up from 0.375% to 0.435%. But it closed at 0.565% the day before and at 0.750% the day before that. Every time that the T-Bill yield falls like this there are concerns raised about cash shortages among certain banks. That concern with the banks will not go away until the market yield is higher than the Fed rate, which is now 1.000%.
The DJIA futures closed the week at 9298. The prior week’s close was 8261.
Trick or treat? Well the equity market was a treat this week as money flowed out of bonds. But, I suspect there are too many tricks being played by market insiders at the major capital pools (HB&B and the Funds). It looks to me that the regulators are sitting on their thumbs while waiting for the next Administration to usher in a new senior management and a whole different set of rules and regulations.
Market volatility is like the weather. Unlike Gump’s box of chocolates, nobody knows what to expect.
