Daily Report for Fri, Nov 14, 2008
At 1:00pm ET yesterday, the US equity markets reversed course to what may soon be seen as an intermediate-term rally of several months duration. Price strength, especially at the outset, will be tested by the non-believers. This morning is likely to see a bit of that action.
But, yesterday, at the close, the DJIA (+552.59 +6.67% to 8835.25), the S&P 500 (+58.99 +6.92% to 911.29) and NASDAQ Composite (+97.49 +6.50% to 1596.70) had set record gains.
The Toronto Composite index also jumped (+430.2 +4.82% to 9352.78), while the Venture Board (-8.91 -1.08% to 813.59) dropped a bit.
There was no worst performing sector or industry yesterday in NY. The best of the sectors were Energy (XLE +11.8%) and Basic Materials (XLB +8.1%). In the industry groups, the Goldminers ($XAU +12.7%) and Oil Services ($OSX +11.8) were strong. So too were the REITs ($DJR +11.3%).
$GOLD dropped -$13.30/oz to 705.00, but $WTIC crude oil gained +$5.16/bbl to 59.06. The $GOLD is soaring today.
Interestingly, that while there were zero gainers in the Cara 100 the previous day, yesterday saw 98 winners. Only DELL -2.2% and SBUX -0.2% were down, and the volume on these two was very high.
Volume overall picked up a lot, and the closing rally was almost of panic proportions.
As expected, when money flowed into riskier equities, the bond market suffered. The $USB long bond dropped -0.91% to 117.02. The annualized US T-Bill yield stayed down near the previous day’s absurd level.
The $USD weakened, losing -0.97% to 86.69, while the Euro ($XEU) made a huge gain of +2.51% to 127.65. The British Pounds (-0.60% to 148.27) were weak, but the Yen ($XJY -3.18% to 102.14) was crushed. The Cdn Loonie also had a huge day, gaining +2.25% to 82.57.
Earlier today, the Asia-Pacific markets were stronger: Japan’s Nikkei 225 (+2.72% to 8462.4); Australia (+1.46% to 3726.0); Shanghai (+3.05% to 1986.4); Hong Kong (+2.43% to 13542.7); and Sensex BSE 30 of India (+2.43% to 13542.7) were all higher.
In Europe in late session (9:30am ET), the equity markets are up as well: French CAC +2.07%; German DAX +2.78%; and UK FTSE +2.50%, basically unchanged in the past hour. Traders are waiting for the post-opening hour orders to settle down before moving ahead.
Spot prices at 9:03am ET today for gold, palladium, platinum and silver are, respectively: 744.00; 217; 844; and 9.56, are all much higher.
$WTIC crude oil futures are at 58.23/bbl.
DJIA futures are at 8693, which indicates a small sell-off at the open, reflecting some profit-taking. The final hour will prove interesting. I believe the buying strength will become apparent.
Comments & Outlook
In the Community Chat today, I noted that I would be removing Goldman Sachs (GS) from the Cara 100. I gave my reasons, and you will note that the decision is not linked to share price, otherwise I would never consider keeping Brunswick Corp (BC) in the list.
The capital markets are dynamic. Prices dance. It’s time that Goldman Sachs sits out. They may stay out. We’ll just have to see.
Anyway, there will be a lot of water under the bridge before that subsequent decision is broached.
The US equity market opened, as expected, weakly. The DJIA index is presently down -125 points. The selling is broad based, which is also as expected because this is just profit-taking. An hour or two later will likely see some price strength.
Have a good day.
