Markets Re-cap
Entry: 2:37pm ET: Today, after being offline for two and a half days for internet connectivity issues, I will give you my take on what’s happening and the decisions I think traders should make with their capital.
When the DJIA, S&P 500 and NASDAQ dropped -6.8%, -8.8% and -9.1% respectively in a matter of hours on Monday, the panic was obvious. I gave you my take on the weekend; now you see the flip side: No Deal – No Bull! Yesterday’s rally had most to do with renewed optimism for a deal this week.
In this entire matter, I see no leadership other than from the People who have clearly instructed their elected representatives in the US Congress to vote down the Bill. In effect, the Congress then voted non-confidence in the proposed legislation.
In most countries, that result leads to the immediate resignation by government. As the US system doesn’t permit this process, there is no accountability for the non-confidence unless Congress votes immediately to impeach the Treasury Secretary, Federal Reserve chairman and SEC chairman. That would help clear the impasse and lay the groundwork for the changes that are needed. But it won’t happen because the US political process is under lock-down mode by the Interventionists.
In the Community Chat today, I provide a Plan that I think is needed to put America back on track with free capital markets and to rein in a financial system and government where spending is out of control. There are no band-aids in my recommendations; these points are directed at the source of the problems.
Switching back to capital markets, I reiterate my belief and recommendation that the New Bull is starting, largely because of the cash on the sidelines plus the unprecedented (almost) one trillion dollar injection of funds by the Fed ($630 billion) and other central banks on Monday, and by the trillion dollars that were injected in the past few months. This new liquidity will open up the credit and equity markets as soon as the powerful psychology of fear has abated.
For the debt markets to get back to work, however, there must be higher rates (ie, lower bond prices) that recognize the central bank liquidity injections, which is why I gave the recommendation to sell bonds a week ago (eg, when the US 30-year bond reached almost 123.00).
While fearful, most traders today are also affected by a psychological condition called ‘in extremis’. They are in temporary shock, unable to make decisions. Usually when they do, as seen in the past, they make the wrong ones because they listen to people saying the sky is falling. They listen to wolves dressed in sheep’s clothing. Those are not the people to be listening to.
I’m here to tell you that Armageddon has not arrived; life will go on. Yes, I am concerned about the state of the global economy for 2009-2010, but China, for example, had a crashing market along with a robust economy, so I know the reverse can be true. Bull markets are usually built on the proverbial wall of worry.
The -30% crash in the DJIA index that took just hours to work through in October 1987 has happened over the course of recent months. But people are just as stunned nonetheless because there are major changes happening, like the failure of major banks and dealers, and people, for the most part, don’t like to deal with change.
But, when pension and hedge fund managers report their positions after the yesterday’s close, many people will be crushed. After they see the data, they will no longer be in denial. And, politics aside, that will be the notional bottom for the equity market – the point in time when emotions are purged and a new attitude can, and I believe will, develop.
I have a list of three dozen stocks to consider buying here. Each of these companies has respectable management, financial strength, operating margins, long-term returns on shareholder capital, industry leadership positions, and good products and services. There are problems with some of them, but consider that these same problems were evident during recent times when share prices were much higher.
In order of the GICS sectors, here are the 36 companies and ticker symbols (alpha order) that I like:
Sector 10: Energy
• ECA EnCana
• IMO Imperial Oil
• SU Suncor Energy
• XOM Exxon Mobil
Sector 15: Basic Materials
• Mostly precious metals at this point [25% invested after the $USD reaches a short-term cycle peak in a couple days as the Euro/Pound sinks due to the credit market crisis that monetary authorities there must stabilize].
• ABX Barrick Gold
• DOW Dow Chemical
• GG Goldcorp Inc
• SLW Silver Wheaton
Sector 20: Industrials and Transports
• ABB ABB Limited
• BA Boeing
• GE General Electric
Sector 25: Consumer Discretionary Spending
• None at this point until the credit markets recover
• After an initial rally from an over-sold condition, most of these stocks will likely miss the first leg of the Bull and start to lift say about March 2009
Sector 30: Consumer Staples
• DEO Diageo
• KO Coca-cola
• MCD McDonalds
• PG Procter & Gamble
• WAG Walgreens
• WMT Wal-Mart
Sector 35: Consumer Healthcare
• DNA Genentech
• JNJ Johnson & Johnson
Sector 40: Financial
• Only a few at this point until the credit markets recover
• After an initial rally from an over-sold condition, most of these stocks will likely miss the first leg of the Bull and start to lift say about March 2009
• HBC HSBC Holdings [very strong in the emerging economies]
• IBKR Interactive Brokers [brokers and traders and not dealers]
• OXPS OptionsXpress Holdings [brokers and not dealers]
• RY Royal Bank of Canada [very strong in the emerging economies]
Sector 45: Technology
• CSCO Cisco Systems
• DELL Dell Inc
• GOOG Google
• IBM IBM
• INTC Intel Corp
• ORCL Oracle
• QCOM Qualcomm Inc
• RIMM Research In Motion
Sector 50: Telecom
• MICC Millicom International
• NOK Nokia Corp
• TEF Telefonica SA
Sector 55: Utilities
• CCJ Cameco [not a utility technically speaking but supplies uranium]
• EXC Exelon Corp [uranium utility]
This list is lengthy but not complete. I can think of many other high quality companies that are trading at attractive prices. I just need to remind you that cycle bottoms happen in periods of fear just like cycle tops happen in periods of greed.
You know where the world stands today. I cannot act for you, but I can tell you what I am doing for clients because this is a period of fear, and I have no problem taking action.
To repeat what I have been saying through this Bear market ending process; it pays to close your ears and to direct your full attention to prices. Trends and cycles are reversing here. This time in the market is what successful traders wait for. Carpe diem; seize the opportunity.
Have a good day.
I regret only not being able to publish as much as I would like this week because of a technology issue with ISP line or cable modem. My computer systems are fine. Yesterday I ordered DSL to back up the cable ISP. Also, as I just returned to Nassau and took a new residence, and needed to do many other tasks, I didn’t have the time needed to devote full attention to installing back-up systems. Now I have.
At least my brain is working, I think. For sure my personal values and interests haven’t changed through this crisis.
