Daily Report for Tue, Oct 28, 2008
I will start by reporting Asia-Pacific and European results because that is what has driven the DJIA futures up almost +400 points this morning.
At mid-session in Japan and elsewhere across the Asia-Pacific region at that time, equity prices started to rally. The banks stayed soft, but the exporters, including the auto makers, started to soar. That meant to be that the $USD moon-shot rally of the past month might be coming to an end. Equity prices might finally be turning north.
Australia (-0.34% to 3755.4) was too late in the session to catch the green, but Shanghai (+2.81% to 1771.8), Hong Kong (+14.35% to 12596.3), and Japan (+6.41% to 7621.9) had powerful moves. Japan had been well underwater after the morning session ended, but in the afternoon it was a breathtaking experience to watch the moves in Honda (HM) and Toyota (TM).
In Europe at 7:50am ET, the French CAC +3.3%; German DAX +7.2%; and UK FTSE 100 +3.8% were all solidly higher.
This morning the DJIA futures are up +366 to 8377 before 8:00am ET.
Yesterday, the DJIA -203.18 -2.42% to 8175.77), S&P 500 (-27.85 -3.18% to 848.92), and NASDAQ Composite (-46.13 -2.97% to 1505.90) reflected only the final hour of selling because prior to that there appeared to be a sense that prices were going to close well up on the session.
Yesterday, the Toronto Composite was smashed with a loss of -756.75 -8.14% to 8537.34, while the Venture Board, which contains the listings of mostly negative cash flow companies, ie, those relying on the confidence of independent traders as well as credit from their bankers, fared better. The Venture Board dropped -22 -2.64% to 808.99.
There was no sector leader yesterday in NY. The best was Consumer Discretionary (XLY -2.5%). The worst was Basic Materials (XLB -7.4%).
The only positive industry group of note was the semiconductors ($SOX +0.2%), while there were too many that lost over -3%, including the Goldminers ($XAU -9.2%). The $USD and $XJY rallies smashed the gold and silver stocks. Silver Wheaton (SLW -24.7%) became the whipping boy du jour. That move was a panic attack aided by fear mongers and perhaps some forced institutional selling.
Volume was exceptionally light among the Cara 100. The winner was VIP +18.8% followed by BMY +5.2%. The losers other that SLW were MFC -14.3%, which is serious for such an important Canadian financial company, plus GG -11.5% and GOL -10.9%.
The $USD and $XJY (Yen) rallied +0.39% to 86.75 and +1.48% to 107.47, respectively. The British Pound ($XBP -3.23% to 155.87), Euro ($XEU -0.90% to 125.21) and Cdn Loonie ($CDW -1.37% to 77.28) were hammered.
The US long bond ($USB +0.32% to 117.33) was up, but yields started rising right after the bonds closed. The credit market showed more problems as the US T-Bill yield sank -11% to 0.73. The good news is that considerable money started flowing to the first and second tier US banks from the US Treasury yesterday. Relief is on the way. Traders are liking that.
Also, AP reported last evening that Boeing (BA) and the machinists union are in a tentative four-year settlement deal to end their strike that has lasted since Sept 6, shutting down all commercial airplane manufacturing at the company. The market will like that.
Comments & Outlook
Today will be an interesting one. I will be buying the market today. Carefully -- until I see the volume explode. Then you can be sure if prices are still in rally mode, I will be there amongst the buyers.
If I change my mind, I will write up an addendum.
