Markets Re-cap
“The last hour of a trading session is typically the most important because, in times of pressure, it best shows us whether the emotional bias of traders is one of fear or greed." (Bill Cara Daily Report Oct. 10).
Yesterday the final hour prices soared, and the major maket indexes set all-time records for a single session. Yet there are people who wish to debate whether this is a secular Bull versus cyclical rally. The mind boggles.
Yesterday and overnight, the gains on the international equity markets were massive, including in NY where the DJIA (+946.42 +11.08% to 9387.61), S&P 500 (+104.13 +11.58% to 1003.35) and NASDAQ Composite (+194.74 +11.81% to 1844.25) were all-time records.
The Toronto Composite and Venture Board were closed for Canadian Thanksgiving.
Earlier in the day yesterday, international markets were also booming: Australia (+5.14%), Hong Kong (+10.2%), France (+11.2%), Germany (+11.4%) and the UK (+4.1%) were all in rally mode.
In NY, the best performing sectors (XLE +16.5% and XLB +14.1%) had gains of immense proportions. The laggards were the Consumer Discretionary (XLY +3.9%) and Staples (XLP +4.7%).
As for the Cara 100, 97 of 100 were gainers. There were 22 of the 100 that gained more than +20.2% on the day. BBD (+37.3%), TCK (+35.8%), VIP (+33.1%), PDA (+30.8%), PBR (+30.3%), and IBN (+30.0%) were six that were up more than +30% in a single day.
The large North American goldminers were down, probably because the Interventionists were selling $GOLD (-$16.50 on the day) to reduce the enthusiasm, or possibly because a major gold fund was being sold out by Humungous Bank & Broker. Barrick (ABX -6.4%) and Goldcorp (GG -3.3%) were whacked. GE (-2.3%) was the only other loser on this historical day.
The $USD dropped a stunning -1.32% and the Euro gained +1.14%. The Yen dropped -1.32%, but the Pound (+1.57%) and Cdn Loonie (+2.21%) soared.
The US long bond dropped -1.35% to 115.05 as traders flooded out of safe havens into equities.
As stated many times, the Loonie’s fortunes are tied to the Western Canada oil patch. Yesterday, those prices were up about +25%.
Yesterday Crude Oil gained +$3.69/bbl to 81.68.
Overnight today, the Asia-Pacific equity markets mostly quite strong: All-Ords of Australia (+4.1% to 4311.5); Shanghai Composite (-2.7% to 2017.3), Hong Kong (+3.2% to 16832.9), India Sensex 30 (+1.3% to 11483.4), and Japan’s Nikkei 225 (+14.2% to 9447.6). Over the prior three sessions, the Nikkei Dow had plunged -20%.
In Europe at 8:41am ET, the French CAC (+6.5%), German DAX (+6.3%) and UK FTSE 100 (+6.5%) were strong across the board.
The futures this morning, the $USD is weak, down to 81.325 and the Euro stronger at 1.3765. Crude Oil is up +$3.36/bbl to 85.04, which is consistent, but the precious metals are a bid on the soft side.
Presently (8:58am ET), the prices for gold, palladium, platinum and silver: 844.33, 201, 1032, and 10.92, respectively.
The DJIA futures were at 9863 (+355).
Comments & Outlook
The buying wave continues, largely due to the trillions of dollars, euros, pounds, loonies, etc, that are being injected into banks to shore up their problems. Nobody, it seems, is studying the economic or corporate fundamental data. Everybody is focused on the price action.
Traders will be disappointed if they miss this rally. After the initial recovery bounce has settled down, I expect prices will be volatile. But traders would best realize what the coordinated action of global governments is doing to equity markets; they are being reflated by fiat money. As kaimu says, this is not “honest” government; yet it is essential government. Nobody wants a depression or even a severe recession.
Have a good day. The weather here in Nassau is mixed, but the tourists are enjoying themselves anyway. Maybe in a couple weeks, the new-found wealth will translate into more tourists coming here to relax and decompress from the action of the capital markets.
Enjoy your day.
