Daily Report for Sat, Oct 18, 2008
There has been a modest recovery this week from the calamitous situation in capital markets that I wrote about last Saturday.
Outright seize-up of the banking credit system; absolute turmoil in currency and commodity markets; the collapse of capital markets; and a global economy that teeters on the brink of a depression! We are living history. [Bill Cara, Oct. 11, 2008]
A week ago, the Dow Jones Industrial Average capped its worst week since 1914. The MSCI World Index of equities in 23 developed countries slid 20 percent, the most since records began in 1970. This week, life moved on. That’s not to say that people are not just as anxious. Perhaps they are even more anxious because this week they have had the time needed to review their holdings and the results, most people have discovered, are emotionally devastating.
Six months ago, people were making statements in the discourse like why would I move all to cash and have inflation destroy my wealth. They asked; why should I not just hold good defensive, high dividend paying stocks?
Now the answers are obvious. You do it because the first rule of portfolio management and trading is risk management. Protecting what you have is more important than seeking opportunity for income or growth. It’s not often you need to go predominantly to cash, but the recent market crash proves the need to do just that, at times.
Those of you who did read my book “Lessons from the Trader Wizard" know that I preach the need to sell any securities holding the moment it makes you or your family uncomfortable. Some of you did just that – you told me you went 100% to cash a year ago because you believed me when I said something like this crash was possible because the banking system was unstable. Now most others wish you had learned that lesson.
That’s in the past. Perhaps the future holds more of the same. Nobody knows for sure, of course because nobody has ever experienced such dramatic events. But, I feel it important this weekend to try to do a work-out of the circumstances befallen to many. I cannot promise anything more than being empathetic, but I will try to offer a plan to those of you who have written, mostly about the same problem.
Enjoy your day to the extent you can. I’ll be hard at work. My Bahamas ocean playground, just sixty steps away, beckons; however, now that I have traveled down this road, completing the journey is much more important than just another walk on the beach.
