Daily Report for Sat, Oct 04, 2008
The US House of Representatives voted in support of the Wall Street bail-out package. As the vote began at 1:00pm, Europe’s equity market gains of +1.5% across the board had been locked in, but the US equity markets started to plunge, down -4.0% in the final three hours of trading.
Was this a message from Humungous Bank & Broker that the Paulson Package was not a Wall St bail-out after all? You betcha. Deceitful stuff, this. And when Europe opens well down on Monday, will that be a message from HB&B that they want the same bail-out from the governments there? You betcha.
Interventionists are now in full control of the global equity market. Paulson has won. The banks have won. The people’s representatives caved in and the people can take a hike for all the banks care at this point.
I’ll discuss all this in the Week In Review, Sunday morning.
As for Friday, the DJIA (-157.47 -1.50% to 10325.38), S&P 500 (-15.05 -1.35% to 1099.23), and NASDAQ Composite (-29.33 -1.48% to 1947.39) were beaten down a second straight day. It’s been a tough week for the Bulls. Yes, I am now a Bull.
The Toronto Composite (-97.2 -0.89% to 10803.35) and Venture Board (-11.7 -0.89% to 1300.2) were down, but much less than NY.
The leading sectors in NY (Staples and Basic Materials) were down -0.8% and -1.0% respectively. The rest were sold off more heavily, with the worst being Financials (XLF -4.4%) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY -3.5%).
There were no leading industries, but the goldminers ($XAU +1.0%) made a small bounce after the previous day’s -15.5% crushing. Helping the HB&B case, the REITs ($DJR -4.8%) and Banks ($BKX -3.7%) were sold off, particularly in the afternoon as the US legislators were voting in support of what is really a $1+ trillion rescue package of the credit market, which these industries need.
Interestingly, while the DJIA was plummeting on Friday, the Cara 100 companies I listed as Buy candidates were performing well, led by CCJ, SU, HBC, WMT, NOK, DNA, QCOM, GG, ABX, XOM, BA and CSCO. Such a situation cannot happen unless there has been a manipulation in the market. But, I’ll discuss that in the WIR.
The losing Cara 100 stocks were: VCP (-13.2%), SNDK (-11.0%), BC (-9.2%), TGP (-8.1%) and GRMN (-7.8%).
Volume, although a bit higher than the previous days, was still low. The afternoon selling was not done in panic.
On the economic front, the US Jobs Report showed an estimated loss of 159,000 jobs and an unemployment rate of 6.1%. This is a bad situation, which will lead to more housing foreclosures. The National Rescue Plan legislation, while motivated by other principal reasons, will address the credit market problems, which will positively impact on jobs and housing, but the turnaround will take months.
The US Treasury market was pumped higher again on a safe-haven switch to debt. The long bond ($USB) lifted +0.21% to 119.64, which is a neat three-day gain of +2.2%. Yields are falling; the 3-month T-Bill is now yielding just +0.47% p.a. Even after Washington took action to resolve the credit market issues, the banks refused to lend to one another. The bigger issue of credit default swaps was ignored in this legislation; there ought to have been a plan for a credit derivatives exchange to put this market front-and-center for traders to see what’s going on, so they can make appropriate decisions.
The $USD was almost flat on the day, losing -0.10% from 80.55 to 80.47. The Euro also dropped (-0.27% to 137.93) and the Yen (-0.01% to 95.02) and the Cdn Loonie (-0.31% to 92.52). The only gainer was the British Pound, up +0.62% to 177.55.
Crude Oil ($WTIC -$0.09/bbl to 93.88) and $GOLD futures (-$11.10/oz to 833.20) were flat to soft, likely on forced selling.
The Asia-Pacific equity markets closed lower on Friday: All-Ords of Australia (-1.49% to 4702.8), Hong Kong (-2.90% to 17682.4), India Sensex 30 (-4.05% to 12526.3) and Japan’s Nikkei 225 (-1.94% to 10938.1).
In Europe at the close, right before the vote in the US Congress, the French CAC (+2.96% to 4080.75), German (+2.47% to 5797.03) and UK FTSE 100 (+2.26% to 4980.25) were soaring into the weekend, presuming a strongly positive market reaction to the US bail-out legislation.
The forex futures at the close of the week were for $USD (80.58) and Euro (138.29), not showing much movement during the day.
Precious metals spot prices at the close on Friday were (vs 8:38am prices) for gold, palladium, platinum and silver were 834.20 (838.75), 197 (199), 960 (956), and 11.09 (11.16) respectively.
Nov. Crude Oil closed at 93.38, a bit softer on the day. The DJIA futures closed the week at 10364.
