Daily Report for Tue, Sep 02, 2008
Markets Re-cap
The USD is in rally mode because economists are now recognizing that the US GDP will likely grow faster than had been expected and the economies of Japan, Europe and the UK will grow much slower. For a couple months I had been reporting this as the big untold story.
The OECD has downgraded the Japan, UK and Eurozone 2008 GDP growth forecasts to 1.2%, 1.2% and 1.3% from 1.7% for all, respectively. For the US, the earlier forecast of 1.2% growth has been raised to 1.8%. This is the reason commodity prices are crashing and the $USD is rallying.
In open futures at 7:41am ET, the Sept Euro (falling -0.78% to 1.4472), Oct Crude Oil (down -$2.86/bbl to 108.36) and Dec Gold (down -11.5/oz to 811.4) are in free-fall, while the Sept DJIA is strong (+77) at 11636.
In the cash (spot) precious metals market (last week’s closing spot prices in brackets), at 7:45am ET, gold is down to 806.15 (829.85), palladium at 289 (303), platinum at 1390 (1482) and silver at 13.16 (13.60). These price changes reflect $USD strength. At Friday’s close, the $USD was trading at 77.31; this morning it’s at 78.235.
At 8:00am ET, the European bourses are stronger: French CAC +1.40%, German DAX +1.45%, and UK FTSE +0.15%.
Comments & Outlook
This plunge in the prices of crude oil and precious metals is something I have been expecting, as you know. This is the start of the cycle bottoming process that will lead to a significant buying opportunity, sometime in 2H08, which I implore you not to squander.
Have a great day.
