Daily Report for Fri, Sep 12, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Today will be known as Death Watch Friday: Lehman, Wamu, Wachovia – name your poison.
As if anybody really is watching or, for that matter, cares, the major market indexes in New York recovered a bit more from Tuesday’s trouncing.
At the end of the session yesterday, the DJIA (+164.79 +1.46% to 11433.71), S&P 500 (+17.01 +1.38% to 1249.05), and NASDAQ Composite (+29.52 +1.32% to 2258.22) all rebounded (temporarily). Canada’s Toronto Composite (12613) closed higher and Venture Board (1564) closed lower.
Earlier today, prices in Asia-Pacific markets were mixed: Australia’s All Ords (+1.76% to 4957.1); Shanghai (+0.03% to 2079.7); Hong Kong’s Hang Seng (-0.18% to 19352.9); India’s Sensex (-2.26% to 14000.8); and Japan’s Nikkei 225 (+0.93% to 12214.8).
Like Japan, Europe is stronger this morning too, up +0.4%, +0.2% and +0.7% for the CAC, DAX and FTSE at 9:00 am ET.
In NY yesterday, the winning sectors were Financials and Industrials (XLF and XLI) up +2.3%. There were no losers yesterday.
The biggest losers among stocks of Cara 100 companies were: INFY -5.1%, CEO -3.6%, ABX -4.4%, and GG -3.3%. The winners were PBR +6.5%, POT +5.4%, QCOM +5.1%, and GOOG/TS +4.7%.
The 30-year US Treasury Bond ($USB) lifted to 120.84, and the yield on the 3-month T-Bill has dropped to 1.550.
Lehman Brothers continues on its death march, but there are other banks and brokers in trouble as well.
The $USD continue its rally, lifting +0.47% to 80.22, while the Euro dropped -0.32% to 139.70, the Yen gained +0.47% to 93.39, while the Pound gained +0.06% to 175.54, and the Cdn Loonie was down -0.57% to 92.90.
$WTIC Crude Oil dropped -$1.71/bbl to 100.87 and $GOLD was hammered -$17.00/oz to 745.50.
In the futures and spot markets moments ago, Crude Oil October contracts on the NYMEX are up +$0.91/bbl to 101.78; the Euro Sept contracts are at 1.4095; and the $USD Sept contracts are at 79.90. The Sept DJIA is 11397 (-58).
Spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver at 9:00am ET are: 754.80, 242, 1186, 10.74, not much changed.
On the US economic front, wholesale prices dropped steeply in August.
