Markets Re-cap
The US equity Bear market cycled lower yesterday, closing near its lows. By the session’s end, there were no sectors or industries that gained. When the strongest on the day had Consumer Staples (XLP) and NatGas stocks ($XNG) falling more than -0.6%, you know the Bulls were hurting.
In NY, the DJIA (-344.65 -2.99% to 11188.23), S&P 500 (-38.15 -2.99% to 1236.83), and the NASDAQ Composite (-74.69 -3.20% to 2259.04) all plunged.
In Canada, the Toronto Composite (-324 -2.46% to 12814.14) and the Venture Board (-45.5 -2.43% to 1829.43) also plunged.
Earlier today, the Asia-Pacific stocks: Australia (-2.01% to 4949.5), Shanghai (-3.29% to 2202.4), Hong Kong (-2.24% to 19933.3), Japan (-2.75% to 12212.2) and India (-2.79% to 14483.8) all sank to comparable levels.
Commodity prices remained weak; Crude Oil ($WTIC) dropped -$1.46/bbl to 107.89 and $GOLD dropped -$5.00/oz to 803.20. Intra-day levels were lower.
In NY yesterday, the worst sector was Financials (XLF -4.9%) as Broker-Dealers ($XBD -5.1%) and Banks ($BKX -4.8%) sank with downgrades. As an example, Goldman downgraded Merrill Lynch to a Strong Sell.
But the Tech (XLK), Basic Materials (XLB), Industrials (XLI) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY) sectors were all leaders to the downside as well, each losing -3.33% or more.
Goldminers ($XAU -4.2%) were hammered.
For the extreme price changes in the stocks of Cara 100 companies, where the trading volumes were stronger again, there were only three stocks that lifted on the day: KB -1.6%, DELL +0.2% and KO +0.1%. The losers were led by non-US headquartered companies, VIP and GGB -9.4%, MBT -8.5%, ABB -7.0%, and TCK and RIMM -6.4%, clearly covering all industries from pulp & paper, steel, telecom, personal communications, heavy construction and mining. So, it’s not just the US companies and not just the Financials that were being sold.
Traders have been going to safety in the form of US Treasury instruments. The long bond ($USB +0.41% to 119.94) was very strong. Yields dropped across the board, to: 4.281, 3.643, and 2.876 for the 30-year, 10-year and 5-year bonds and notes respectively. The T-Bill yield dropped a tad to 1.650.
In European trading at this point (8:23am ET), the French CAC, German DAX and UK FTSE are down -1.0%, -1.5% and -0.9% respectively. In the cross-over session yesterday, these bourses also took a large part of the losses in the US market indexes, so these losses today so far are just a catch-up and not an indication of what might happen in NY later in the day.
In open futures at 8:20am ET, the Sept Euro (falling -0.44% to 1.4254), Oct Crude Oil (down -$1.03/bbl to 106.86), and Sept DJIA (-41 to 11159) are down, while the Sept $USD is stronger (+0.23% at 78.87. Traders are waiting for the US Jobs Report at 8:30am ET, which could dramatically impact these levels (which is why I record them and time stamp them).
In the cash (spot) precious metals market prices are a bit stronger, at 8:46am ET: gold is 799.10, palladium at 275, platinum at 1377, and silver at 12.76.
Comments & Outlook
It will be a tough day for the Bulls because the US Jobs data was just published at 8:30am ET and the DJIA futures have quickly gone down to about -100. Unemployment has zoomed.
Education and government (consumers of wealth) are where the jobs are being created. That’s a bad sign for the short-term.
Do you recall a few months ago when I opined that rising unemployment in the US would become a huge problem for the US economy? More unemployment means less consumer spending, less driving, etc.
But it also means a lower $USD, for a time, which will boost the precious metals a bit (temporarily), so today (on a bit of strength) will not be a good day to buy those precious metals. You want to train yourself to buy into weakness. Let the prices come to you.
These are interesting times.
