Daily Report for Tue, Aug 26, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Yesterday the Bulls became ostriches, sticking their head in the sand, refusing to raise a bid. The NY market sold off across all sectors, and all industries, on extremely low volume.
At the close, the DJIA (-241.81 -2.08% to 11386.25), S&P 500 (-25.36 -1.96% to 1266.84), and NASDAQ Composite (-49.12 -2.03% to 2365.59) closed sharply lower.
In Canada, the Toronto Exchange Composite lost -1.18% to 13289, and the Venture Board closed down -0.60% to 1940.
All sectors in NY were down, but the Financials (XLF -3.5%) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY -2.8%) fell the most. The Banks ($BKX -3.5%) were leaders on the downside. More banks are reported closing their doors.
Of the extreme Cara 100 stocks, there were only 3 winners, and none were extreme: NTES +0.5%, HBC +0.4%, and CEO +0.2%. But, despite 97 losers! there were none that dropped more than CTSH at -4.7%, which isn't that bad. The other extreme losers were BC -4.6%, AET -4.5% and INFY -4.0%. Moreover, volume was sharply lower, so this was not a panic sell-off.
The long bond ($USB) zoomed to 118.55 (+0.73%) as traders rushed to safety. Treasury yields fell across the board. The T-Bill yield is now at 1.645.
Earlier today, the Asia-Pacific equity markets were down, but only moderately so: Australia’s All Ords index (-0.15% to 5082.3); Shanghai (-2.62% to 2350.08); Hong Kong (-0.23% to 21056.7); India’s Sensex (+0.22% to 14482.2); and Japan’s Nikkei (-0.78% to 12778.7).
In Europe, markets were also soft at about 8:00am ET, with the French CAC -0.81%), German DAX -0.08%, and the UK FTSE -1.56%.
Yesterday there was little movement in the forex market ($USD +0.04%), while Crude Oil ($WTIC +0.52/bbl to 115.11) and precious metals ($GOLD -$7.80/oz to 825.70) headed in different directions. This morning both oil and gold are well down.
At 8:06am ET, the Euro/USD was down sharply at 1.4584 and the $USD up to 77.59. Crude Oil futures ($WTIC) were down -$1.71 to 113.40. The DJIA futures are at 11379, which is a drop of over -30 in the past 30 minutes.
At 8:15am ET, Spot Gold, palladium, platinum and silver futures are at 811.75, 286.0. 1415, and 13.165 respectively, which are softer.
Comments & Outlook
I believe the banks will continue to suffer at this point, and oil and precious metal prices will sink. The upper limit to a cycle bottom trading range in commodities has been set in place, and now the bottom level must be firmly established. I am getting closer to finally calling a buy in gold and sell in bonds. But we are not a couple days away from that – more likely many weeks.
