Markets Re-cap
Wednesday trading was very quiet in most markets. This will be the lowest trading volume and volatility week of the year to date.
Almost from the open yesterday, the NY equity market was a tad stronger. At the close, the DJIA (+89.64 +0.79% to 11502.51), S&P 500 (+10.15 +0.80% to 1281.66), and NASDAQ Composite (+20.49 +0.87% to 2382.46) were all higher by about the same percent.
In Canada, the Toronto Exchange Composite gained +1.74% to 13531, and the Venture Board gained +0.38% to 1950.
The winning sectors in NY were Financials (XLF +1.9%) and Energy (XLE +1.6%) with the Goldminers ($XAU +2.6%) and Broker-Dealers ($XBD +2.3%) leading the way. Airlines ($XAL -2.9%) was the weakest industry group we follow.
Another 52-week low was set by VCP (@20.29).
Of the extreme Cara 100 stocks, the winners were CEO +7.7%, TS +4.4%, CHA and KB +4.0%, and CCJ and STO +3.7%. BMY -2.1% and TM -1.6% were losers, but volumes were down.
The long bond ($USB) was also quiet, lifting +0.14% to 118.80. The T-Bill yield is now at 1.640.
Earlier today, the Asia-Pacific equity markets were down in Hong Kong and India, but up in Australia. The closes were: Australia’s All Ords index (+1.09% to 5143.3); Shanghai (+0.34% to 2350.1); Hong Kong (-2.29% to 20972.3); India’s Sensex (-1.74% to 14048.3); and Japan’s Nikkei (+0.12% to 12768.3).
In Europe, markets were well up at about 9:00am ET, with the French CAC +1.6% to 3082, German DAX +0.9% to 6381, and the UK FTSE +1.2% to 5593.
Yesterday there was more movement in the forex market, but this time it was the Euro strengthening: the $USD dropped -0.31% to 77.02, while the Euro gained +0.52% to 147.29. For the others, the Yen gained +0.14% to 91.33; the Pound lost -0.17% to 183.63, while the Cdn Loonie gained +0.18% to 95.57.
Crude Oil ($WTIC +0.33/bbl to 116.60) and precious metals ($GOLD -1.22/oz to 826.88) were quiet.
At 9:00am ET today, the Euro/USD was up strongly +0.46% to 1.4762, while the $USD is down -0.54% to 76.78.
Crude Oil futures ($WTIC) are up +1.30/bbl to 119.45, mostly due to TS Gustav, which is likely soon to be Hurricane Gustav, headed toward the Gulf of Mexico oil fields. The DJIA Sept futures are up +71 to 11568, despite the higher oil price, as traders are looking beyond the storm to lower oil prices.
At 9:04am ET, Spot Gold, palladium, platinum and silver futures are stronger, at 842.85, 293.0, 1487, and 13.93 respectively, which are all higher along with oil.
Comments & Outlook
As I commented yesterday, there is really not much to say about a market as quiet as this one. The situation does remind me of the summer of 1981, waiting for the next shoe to drop, although this time around the interest rates are well down waiting to rise and the rates then were at record highs and ready to fall. So the bond market then was the buy of the generation. This time, it’s close to being the opposite.
