Daily Report for Sat, Aug 02, 2008

Markets Re-cap

Friday’s US Jobs Report for July was better than generally expected, but disappointing to the Bulls, who sold stocks off the top. Then, on a very low volume day in the middle of the summer, prices returned to being flat until a late session sell-off took the prices down a few points. It wasn’t much of a day.

At the close, the DJIA (-51.70 -0.45% to 11326.32), S&P 500 (-7.07 -0.56% to 1260.31), and the NASDAQ Composite (-14.59 -0.63% to 2310.96) reflected the lack of interest by traders.

The winning sectors (XLF, XLE, XLI and XLP) were all flat. The losers were Utilities (XLU -2.9%) and Basic Materials (-1.8%).

Of the industry groups, Papers were strong again, but the notables were Banks ($BKX +1.8%), Broker-Dealers ($XBD -1.6%) and Hospitals ($RXH +1.8%). Goldminers ($XAU), completing a series of bad days (Tues, Thursday and Friday), dropped -3.7% on Friday.

There were more reports of sales problems around the world for the auto manufacturers, which is pointing analysts to the macro-economic data, which many believe is worsening again. The largest US Savings&Loan Bank failure in history occurred as IndyMac went Chapter 7.

Two of Japan’s biggest banks (Mizuho and Sumitomo Mitsui) reported Q1 weakness, which took the Nikkei 225 down -2.11% on Friday, closing at 13094.59 for a 250 point loss on the week.

Australia’s All Ords index also dropped, closing at 4978.0 (-1.48%). But, Shanghai (+0.94% to 2801.8), Hong Kong (+0.58% to 22862.6) and India’s Sensex (+2.26% to 14680.2) (with a closing hour flourish), closed higher Friday.

Among the Cara 100 stocks, the India-centric companies were the stars for the Bulls: Cognizant (+CTSH +4.4%) on good results [but cautionary guidance], the banks ICICI (IBN +2.7%) and HDFC (HDB +1.9%) and Infosys (INFY +2.6%), after which the senior officer was interviewed by CNBC. Coca-Cola (KO +3.2%) was also up. The session’s losers were Energy and Basic Materials companies: Statoil (STO -6.6%), Nucor Steel (NUE -6.0%), BHP (BHP -5.9%), Vale (RIO -5.8%), Teck (TCK -4.8%) and Barrick Gold (ABX -4.2%).

The bond and forex markets got a mid-morning jolt after the US Jobs Report came out. Interestingly, palladium and platinum spot prices plunged right before that report. The long bond ($USB) gained +0.35% on the day to 115.91, capping a positive week. This week, however, has mostly been a safe-haven move by hot money traders, rather than an investment in fixed income per se.

As for currencies, the $USD gained +0.29% to $0.7344 and the Euro lost -0.28% to 1.5557 by the close. But the interesting move happened after the Jobs Report, when the $USD spiked momentarily from $0.7360 to $0.73965 and the Euro from 1.5563 to 1.5478. Gold and silver also moved accordingly, but the moves were muted. The real action took place in palladium for about 60-90 minutes, where at 7:40am through to about 8:40am, the palladium price cratered, and from about 7:50am to about 9:20am, the platinum price did the same.

At the end of the session (and week), the spot prices for gold, palladium, platinum and silver per oz (vs the prices in the past four mornings) were at: 909.55 (911.30, 910.80, 902.36, 925.31 and 930.05); 363.5 (371, 374, 377, 386 and 383); 1651 (1713, 1751, 1740, 1763 and 1752); and 17.43 (17.58, 17.53, 17.02, 17.41 and 17.42). Gold and especially silver prices have been hanging in.

At the futures market close yesterday, $GOLD was down -$5.20/oz to 917.50, while Crude Oil gained +$1.02/bbl to 125.10.

DJIA futures closed the week at 11306.

Comments & Outlook

Many people are on holiday and many others will be taking three days off this weekend, so I am happy to see so much discussion in the Discourse.

I’ll reserve all further comment until I publish the WIR on Sunday. Have a good one.

btw, I can't seem to delete LEH from the Knobias-supplied tables below. I'll ask Danny on Monday to do that.
