Daily Report for Mon, Aug 11, 2008

Daily Report

Trading overnight in Asia-Pacific markets and so far this morning in Europe, is stronger except for China, which continues to struggle. Traders seem undecided at the moment.

Australia’s All Ords index (+0.63% to 5069.3); Shanghai (-5.21% to 2470.1); Hong Kong (-0.12% to 21859.3); India’s Sensex (+2.22% to 15503.9); and Japan’s Nikkei (+1.99% to 13430.9) showed a considerable difference.

At about 8:28am ET in Europe: the French CAC was up+0.50% to 4514; the German DAX up +0.53% to 6597; and the UK FTSE up +0.93% to 5529.

The DJIA futures are now at 11707, which is up almost +500 from a week ago at this time in the day.

Crude Oil is up +$1.20/bbl to 116.40. The $USD is a bit soft, and the Euro a bit stronger, but not much.

The precious metals are a tad soft in the spot market to start the week: gold, palladium, platinum and silver at about 8:31am ET are at: 858.20 (low of 857.15); 334 (328); 1551 (1551); and 15.30 (15.11).

Comments:

I had very many personal letters and comments in the Discourse from people who appreciated the Week In Review this weekend. Thank you.

One person told me (previously) that after a 30 year career working for three major Wall Street broker-dealers in various front-office capacities, he has learned more from my blog than previously in his career. In a way I understand where he is coming from. If it were not for my good fortune in meeting Ian Notley at Dominion Securities, who became my mentor, and later my business associate, I too would have failed to grasp the full significance of trading capital market prices. In a way, I am trying to pass along the legacy that Ian gave to me and so many others.
