Daily Report for Fri, Aug 08, 2008
Markets Re-cap
The calendar says 8-8-08, which is a number in China that signifies great wealth. As the opening ceremonies of the China Olympic Games are set to begin, I shall keep this Daily Report quite short.
Here is the Knobias report on yesterday’s market action: “The markets extended their losses after oil bounced off lows and finished with a solid gain. After trading at their highest levels of the day during the early afternoon session, the markets turned sharply lower as selling pressure increased after Moody's reported that it may cut its rating on AXP. The news sent financials to its lows and lead the market in losses. By the end of the day, all ten sectors traded to the downside with the technology sector outperforming with the smallest loss. With technology outperforming, the Nasdaq predictably beat the other indices while the Dow closed down over 224 points. Treasurys continued to see action as rates fell as investors headed for the safe havens. Looking ahead, Productivity and Costs reports along with wholesale trade data was scheduled to be released (today).”
Yesterday in US equity market trading, the DJIA (-224.64 -1.93% to 11431.43), S&P Composite (-23.12 -1.79% to 1266.07) and NASDAQ Composite (-22.64 -0.95% to 2355.73) all plunged.
Leading the market south were the Financials (XLF -4.9%) and Industrials (XLI -3.4%). Consumer Discretionary (XLY -2.0%) also pulled back sharply.
The Toronto Exchange (-0.51% to 13385.17) and Venture Board (-0.85% to 2130.19) were also weak.
The $USD gained +0.39% to $0.7454, while the Euro dropped -0.56% to 1.5321. $GOLD dropped -$5.10/oz to 877.90, while Crude Oil ($WTIC) gained +$1.44/bbl to 120.02.
In extreme Cara 100 trading, where the volume was low, the winners on the day were JCP and SNDK, both up +6.1% and ATVID +4.2%. INTC gained +3.8%. Because of the oil market rally, the big loser was GOL -13.1%.
Overnight, Australia’s All Ords index (+0.15% to 5037.6); Shanghai (-4.47% to 2605.7); Hong Kong’s Hang Seng (-0.99% to 21885.2); India’s Sensex (+0.33% to 15167.8); and Japan’s Nikkei (+0.33% to 13168.4) showed mixed results.
At about 6:53am ET (1153 GMT) in Europe: the French CAC was up +0.58%; the German DAX up +0.03%; and the UK FTSE down -0.13%, almost unchanged.
Crude Oil is down -$2.17/bbl to 117.85, which has boosted the equity futures. The DJIA futures are at 11473 (+34).
This morning the $USD futures are up strongly to $0.7559, and Euro/USD is weak at 1.5080.
The precious metals spot prices have dropped again as the $USD has rallied strongly: gold, palladium, platinum and silver at 6:54am ET are 861.36, 340, 1558, and 15.79.
Comments & Outlook
This morning I’ll be watching the Games. It’s a good diversion from the market.
