Daily Report for Wed, Jul 30, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Falling Crude Oil prices ($WTIC -$2.54/bbl to 122.19) caused US equity prices to soar yesterday.
The North American equity markets rallied strongly as was apparent early in the day would be the case. The DJIA (+266.48 +2.39% to 11397.86), S&P 500 (+28.83 +2.34% to 1263.20), and the NASDAQ Composite (+55.40 +2.45% to 2319.62) recovered from the prior day’s stumble.
Overnight, the markets in Asia-Pacific continued the rally: Australia up +1.73% to 5008.7; Shanghai down -0.48% to 2836.7; Hong Kong up +1.94% to 22690.6; India’s Sensex 30 up +3.59% to 14287.2; and Japan’s Nikkei 225 up +1.58% to 13367.8.
In Europe at 8:45am ET (1345 GMT), the French CAC was up+1.86% to 4401; the German DAX up +1.29% to 6482; and the UK FTSE up +1.51% to 5400.
Financials (XLF +8.1%) led the rally, followed by Industrials (XLI +3.8%) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY +3.6%).
Energy (XLE -1.2%) suffered from lower oil prices during the session.
The extreme industry groups were Airlines ($XAL), Banks ($BKX +8.7%) and REITs ($DJR +5.8%). Goldminers ($XAU -2.4%) and Oil Services ($OSX -1.6%) were losers.
Among Cara 100 stocks, the losers were studded with Canadian issues: ABX (-3.7%), SLW (-3.6%), ECA, GG, CCJ, SU and IMO. Teck (TCK +6.0%) was one Cdn winner as it agreed to pay over $14 billion for the shares of Fording Cdn Oil Trust it didn’t already own. Another winner was Brunswick Corp (BC +12.6%), which was the direct result of the falling oil price. Carnival Cruises (CCL +5.8%) was another.
The 30-year US long bond ($USB -0.12%) lost ground as capital flowed into equities, raising bond yields across the board a bit.
The $USD had a huge upside day, gaining +0.86% to $0.7330, while the Euro dropped -0.97% to 1.5589.
Precious metals were hammered, with $GOLD falling -$11.40/oz to 926.40.
Spot prices at about 8:45am ET are for gold, palladium, platinum and silver per oz (vs the prices in the past two mornings): 902.36 (925.31 and 930.05), 377 (386 and 383), 1740 (1763 and 1752) and 17.02 (17.41 and 17.42). The USD has firmed to $0.7358.
Crude Oil futures this morning are flat at 122.18, while the DJIA futures are up about +69 to 11442.
Comments & Outlook
The rally is another push by the Interventionist Fed, Treasury and FDIC. The Financials ought never to rally across the board by +8.1% including Banks up +8.7%. The market is full of hot, speculative money. The bottom line is that yesterday there was a push behind the popular European “covered bonds”. The rest of us are questioning motive. More on this later.
In any case, the problems with banks and brokers, and Fannie and Freddie, and the taxpayer-supported legislation to protect losers, right or wrong, domestic or foreign, is hardly over. We shall hear much more of this in the next couple months.
