Daily Report for Wed, Jun 18, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Any interest sparked by the positive Goldman Sachs (GS) report early yesterday failed to hold as the Broker-Dealers ($XBD -3.89%) and Banks ($BKX -3.68%) plunged.
At the end of the day, beaten down by downbeat US and European macro-economic data and a perceived crisis taking shape between the European Central Bank and the Fed, the DJIA (-108.78 -0.89% to 12160.30), S&P 500 (-9.21 -0.68% to 1350.93) and NASDAQ Composite (-17.05 -0.69% to 2457.73) were hammered.
The only strength in the US equity market yesterday was in Energy (XLE +1.66%) as the Financials (XLF -2.92%), including Insurance and REITs, plunged. In the oil complex, the Oils, Oil Services and Chemicals were all strong, but the NatGas stocks ($XNG +2.35%) were the leaders.
Crude Oil ($WTIC -0.81/bbl to 134.53) dropped for a third day in a row, but not by much.
As for Goldman Sachs, the Company beat Consensus expectations again, although they did report that Q2 earnings dropped -10% to $2.05 billion ($4.58/share).
On the economics front, inflation concerns in the US lifted with the headline PPI number being up +1.4%, well ahead of Consensus growth of +1.0%, That means the prices paid by producers rose at their quickest rate in six months, caused largely by rising energy costs. Also, the US Commerce Department reported that housing starts for May dropped -3.3% to a seasonally adjusted rate of 975,000.
The US Dollar weakened with the bad US econ data. The $USD closed the session down -0.15% to 73.51.
The long-dated US Bond ($USB) was flat on the day.
Cara 100 winners were Brazil’s GGB +5.5%, GOL +4.6% and RIO +3.8%. ATVI gained +4.9%. Losers were GRMN -5.2%, WHR -3.5% and brokers OXPS -3.7% and IBKR -3.4%.
The $GOLD futures closed up just 60 cents/oz to 886.90.
Despite a slightly positive $USD this morning, the precious metal spot prices are up a bit: 885.50, 456, 2081 and 17.05 for gold, palladium, platinum and silver, respectively.
Crude oil futures are trading up +0.515/bbl to 134.525 at this point in the morning, and the DJIA futures are down -42 to 12129.
The All Ordinaries equities index of Australia closed today at 5550.3, up +0.44%, but India’s Sensex 30 was down -1.75% to 15422.3. The Nikkei 225 (+0.73% to 14452.8) and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng (+1.16% to 23326) were strong, but the strongest on the board anywhere today was Shanghai, up +5.24% to 2941.1.
Comments & Outlook
Technical analysts have been aware of the Bull-Bear fight for DJIA=12200. Yesterday the Bears won that battle, and today appear to be moving closer to the kill.
On the matter of the housing industry crisis in the US that has been played up so much (while I have been saying that the US media is missing the story that this industry is in crisis everywhere, and that the problem is not just sub-prime), here is an interesting read from the UK. Its like old news!
