Markets Re-cap
In a mixed session yesterday, the DJIA (-38.27 -0.31% to 12269.08), S&P 500 (+0.11 +0.01% to 1360.14) and NASDAQ Composite (+20.28 +0.83% to 2474.78) were quiet. The NASDAQ index was led higher by RIMM, which was up +6.0%.
The US Dollar, which has been firming up, softened by -0.69% to 73.62. The long-dated US Bond ($USB) was up +0.22% to 112.80. The T-Bill yield lifted a bit to 1.96%.
Financials (XLF +0.94%) took the lead while consumer staples held back, losing -1.07% on the day.
The leading industries were the Goldminers ($XAU +1.72%) and Semi-conductors ($SOX +1.51%).
Cara 100 winners were RIMM +6.0%, SYT +3.8%, and PDA +3.6%. Losers were KO -2.2%, VCP -2.4%, NOK -2.3% and CCL -2.1%. Unable to make the usual profits, cruise ship operator CCL hit a 52-week low of 35.96. GE also hit a low of 28.38.
The $GOLD futures closed +$13.20/oz to 886.30 on the weaker $USD (-0.69% to 73.62.
Precious metal spot prices this morning for gold, palladium, platinum and silver were: 877.10 (-6.82), 454, 2039, and 16.89 (-0.27). The $USD is gaining strength. There could be a test of 850 gold this week.
On the macro-economics front, the story these days is mostly about inflation, and what the central banks intend to do about it.
UK inflation reached +3.3% in May, which was the highest since at least 1997. Bank of England Governor Mervyn King predicts it will exceed +4% later this year, well ahead of the 2% target.
The US Producer Price Index for May also lifted, as expected. But, the Consensus had been for a growth in PPI M/M of an astounding +1.0%, and the reported number was +1.4%. So, wholesale prices jumped at the fastest pace in six months as energy and food costs rocketed higher. However, stripping out those prices, the "core" rate of inflation rose +0.2%, which was an improvement from April’s +0.4% increase.
German investor confidence is at a 15-year low.
Crude oil futures closed at 135.34 for West Texas Intermediate, down -$0.13/bbl.
The All Ordinaries equities index of Australia closed today at 5525.9, up +0.91%, and India’s Sensex 30 was also higher at 15696.9, up +1.96%, but the Nikkei 225 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng were flat. Shanghai Composite dropped -2.76% to 2794.8.
The equity futures are pointing to a higher open.
Comments & Outlook
There will be a lot of talk about the Goldman Sachs report today. Goldman reported earnings this past quarter of $2.05 billion ($4.58 per share) versus $2.29 billion ($4.93/share) a year earlier. Revenue dropped -7.0% to $9.42 billion from $10.18 billion a year earlier. The Consensus forecast according to Thomson Financial was for Goldman to earn $3.42/share on revenue of $8.74 billion.
The results look good to me. But that’s not to say that Goldman can continue this way. Market conditions are tightening.
I'm not chasing these Financials.
