Daily Report for Wed, May 21, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Tuesday started weak and ended weaker, further pressured during the session by fresh record-setting oil prices that immediately followed the $150/barrel forecast by oil speculator and major hedge fund trader Boone Pickens.
At the close, the DJIA (-199.48 -1.53% to 12828.68), S&P 500 (-13.23 -0.93% to 1413.4) and NASDAQ Composite (-23.83 -0.95% to 2492.26) closed well underwater with traders inclined to believe that $130/barrel oil will soon hurt the economy.
The Energy (XLE +0.86%) and Utilities (XLU +0.68%) gained on the strength of oil price speculation, whereas the Financials (XLF -2.45%) led the market south.
Goldminer stocks ($XAU) were pulled up as the gold price was launched higher immediately after the Boone Pickens oil forecast.
Airlines ($XAL -3.3%) were obvious losers. Other industries that pulled the market down yesterday were Semi-conductors ($SOX -2.8%), Banks ($BKX -2.3%) and Retailers ($RLX -2.0%).
For the Cara 100 stocks, the commodity price speculation took the Canadian contingent highest: Suncor (SU +5.4%), Imperial Oil (IMO +5.2%), Goldcorp (GG +4.5%), Silver Wheaton (SLW +3.6%) and Barrick (ABX +3.5%).
The losers were stocks of companies headquartered in Asia-Pacific: CHL -4.8%, HDB -4.6%, and BHP and CHA -4.1%.
On the earnings front, Home Depot (HD -5.2% to $27.37) issued negative guidance, which was a negative for equity prices from the start of the day. HD’s Q1 earnings plunged to $356 million ($0.21/share) from $1.05 billion a year earlier.
On the economics front, the headline Producer Price Index (PPI) number for April lifted +0.4%, about as expected, and certainly a concern. The weekly US retail data (ICSC and Redbook) was also softer-than-expected.
On Monday, Crude Oil ($WTIC) hit yet another all-time record close of 126.95, up +$0.91/bbl. But in mid-morning trading yesterday, Boone Pickens made a strong forecast following which speculators drove the price of oil up by +3.00/barrel, although $WTIC closed the day at 128.98 (+2.26/bbl).
Rising commodity prices are pushing down against the price of the US Dollar, making conditions difficult for central bankers to effectively control.
Yesterday the trade-weighted $USD plunged -0.86% to 72.41. The Euro rallied +0.99% to 1.5659; the Yen +0.53% to 96.41; and the Pound +1.05% to 196.87.
Treasury yields edged lower as the 30-year long bond ($USB) gained +0.59% to 117.30.
Moody’s continues to downgrade various Washington Mutual Bank bonds. WM closed at $9.83; the stock was almost $22 in February and in the mid-40’s last summer. Mortgage applications continued to fall this week.
This morning, the equity markets in Asia-Pacific were mostly down except for Shanghai (+2.93%) and Hong Kong (+1.16%). Australia (-1.31%) and Japan (-1.65%) were down, while India was flat.
In Europe in mid-session, the UK FTSE is up a bit and the French CAC and German DAX are down a bit.
The precious metals spot prices at 7:40am are: gold 925.04 (down about -1.70 in the past hour); palladium 445 (the same as Monday morning); platinum 2183 (strong and moving higher in the past hour); and silver 17.79 (up strongly from Monday).
The near futures for Oil, the Euro and the DJIA are: 130.20; 1.5745; and 12823. The DJIA futures are down from 12983 on Monday morning.
Comments & Outlook
I for one don’t believe the current oil price is sustainable, but I do understand the impact it is having on the market. It is not amazing to me that traders will jump to an oil man’s cheerleading. Prices are driven by fear and greed, particularly during periods of intense speculation.
Traders must realize that the pendulum will swing as it did in the 1970’s and early 1980’s when Bear phases crushed the speculation in oil and precious metals that happened in that cycle, as it has in every cycle.
