Markets Re-cap
Returning from a long weekend, the equity market bulls are nervous. They see the debt markets and the consumer markets in bad health, and worsening. Early this morning on Bloomberg, Oppenheimer analyst Meredith Whitney stuck the fork into the financial services industry and said “this dinner’s done”.
Whitney discussed how seriously the US recession (“a 33% probability of being a significant recession”) would impact consumer income and spending, which strips liquidity and will lead to increased defaults in credit card loans and residential mortgages.
Higher consumer and credit market losses at the banks will then lead to lower bank earnings, additional staff lay-offs, even tighter credit policies and requirements to raise capital reserves. The situation becomes a financial death spiral. Some well-known banks may in fact die.
Earlier today, the shares of Swiss banking giant UBS plunged almost -8% before closing down -5.4% as the company announced a needed further capital raise-up of $15 Billion (9 billion Euros).
Now we are seeing the start of a new round of reduced banking analyst earnings projections, which does not bode well for traders who are contemplating a rally in the financial services sector.
Overnight, the Asia-Pacific markets were stronger than expected as Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped +1.48% to 13893.31. The other gains were modest, however, and the Sensex index of the BSE 30 of India lost -0.45% to 16275.59.
In Europe in late session, the FTSE 100 of the UK is down -0.41% to 6061.8, the French CAC is down -0.84% to 4896.1, and the German DAX is down -0.44% to 6921.6.
At 9:01am ET, precious metals are weak: gold is down to 916.10, palladium to 445, platinum to 2160 and silver to 18.02.
The Euro is at 1.5729, a tad weaker after falling significantly about 2am. Crude Oil futures are firm at 132.525, following oil-related conflict in Nigeria. The DJIA futures are down a bit to 12469, but recovering.
Comments & Outlook
Traders will watch for damage from high oil prices and banking industry rating decreases, but there is still some fight in this market following last week's sell-off.
The wild card here is Crude Oil. If the price drops quickly by say 15%-25%, that would serve to pump up equity prices.
Having said all that, the Bear market is a continuous process of working through lower lows and lower highs.
