Daily Report for Mon, May 19, 2008

Daily Report

On the deals front, Yahoo (YHOO) “is now in a proxy war with Carl Icahn”, which simply means that Icahn and traders like him--hedge fund manager John Paulson, for instance—are betting that Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo will go back to the table.

Yahoo shares are up +1.52% to $28.08 in busy pre-market trading after Microsoft said it has proposed a new deal “that would involve a transaction with Yahoo but not an acquisition of all of Yahoo.” In response, Yahoo restated it remains “open to pursuing any transaction which is in the best interest of our stockholders.”

In other pre-market action, SolarFun Power Hings (SOLF) is up +11.3% to $25.42.

Citi has cut its ratings on Goldman Sachs (GS), Lehman Bros (LEH) and Morgan Stanley (MS), citing more bad news to come.

Crude Oil (June futures) is up almost +$1.00/bbl to 127.02 this morning, and the spot prices of the precious metals are also continuing their rally since early Thursday morning despite a flat Euro so far today. The DJIA June futures are also flat.
