Daily Report for Fri, May 09, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Positive April chain store sales from Wal-Mart (WMT), Costco (COST), and McDonalds (MCD) boosted hopes Thursday, taking the DJIA (+52.43 +0.41%) to 12867, S&P 500 +5.11 +0.37%) to 1398, and NASDAQ Composite (+12.75 +0.52%) to 2451.
The Banks ($XBK) and Retailers ($XBD), down -1.5% and -1.9% respectively on the session did not rally after the DJIA bounced higher off what appears to be key support at 12800. The rally leaders were the inflation-beneficiaries Energy (XLE +2.0%) and Basic Materials (XLB +1.7%).
The strongest industry groups were the Goldminers ($XAU +4.2%) and Oil Services ($OSX +3.3%). The Retailers ($RLX -1.9%) and Banks ($BKX -1.5%) were weak.
On the US economics front, weekly unemployment claims were less than anticipated.
The US long bond ($USB was stronger again ($USB +0.88%) at $115.75.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) gained a further +0.16/bbl to close at 123.69, after hitting a record high of 124.61, in agitated trading. Earlier this morning about 7:20am ET, Crude was up +2.02/bbl to 125.71, a fresh all-time record.
$GOLD lifted +10.90/oz to 882.10, and is stronger again this morning.
Asia-Pacific equity markets were mostly very weak overnight. Australia was the exception (All Ords +0.75% to 5844). Shanghai (-1.2%), Hong Kong (-1.5%), India’s Sensex (-2.0%) and Japan’s Nikkei (-2.1%) sold off. Toyota (TM) took another hit.
In trading at mid-session in Europe, the losses at 7:30am ET were for the FTSE -1.3% to 6189; the French CAC -2.2% to 4943; and the German DAX -1.2% to 6986.
The June Dow 30 futures are up slightly to 12848.
June Crude Oil futures are very strong at 125.68 and the June Euro also stronger at 1.5435. The June DJIA is down -79 to 12745, indicating a weak open, noting that the support had been at 12800.
Spot prices for precious metals are a little stronger again due to the further strengthening of the Euro and Yen. The Cdn Dollar (Loonie) is on fire.
Spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver are 885.60, 432, 2069 (yes, that’s not a mistake!!), and 16.92 respectively.
Comments & Outlook
Even the mighty suffer downturns when economies slow their growth trends. Toyota (TM) is in that situation.
Just as markets closed Thursday, Toyota said its net profit in the fiscal fourth quarter dropped 28 percent due to a strong yen and sluggish U.S. sales. It also projected this fiscal year's profit will tumble 27 percent — which would be its first decline in annual earnings in seven years.
Caution must be urged when the strongest manufacturers and strongest banks are suffering. Funny money printed by government can only jack up the prices of shares for so long. The key here will be the US Retailers ($RLX).
The $RLX in recent days lifted only so far as it hit resistance of the 200-day MA, and then fell back to now where it is sitting atop the crucially important 50-day MA.
If tax rebates, which put billions of USD of basically found money into the hands of shoppers in the US, can’t spur the Retailers to trade well above the 200/50-d moving averages, then one should reasonably expect that rallies will be brief opportunities to sell stock into.
But, as we all know, the driver here is standing at the fuel pump with close to $4.00/gallon. So, traders must also be watching the Crude Oil ($WTIC) prices for a break.
With the 50-d MA for $WTIC at about $110, the current price falling -$15 to the first technical support ought to provide some relief to the Retailers. OPEC seems to think the oil companies are the problem, and the oil companies will tell you it’s the speculators. The speculators will say it’s all about inflation and the $USD.
It’s a problem for the economy, but we have our eye on market prices.
