The DJIA (-104.79 -0.82% to 12720), S&P 500 (-11.29 -0.81% to 1377), and Nasdaq Composite (-31.10 -1.24% to 2378) were beaten down. The Nikkei 225 of Japan was down -1.09% to 13548 and the three major European bourses were down from -0.3% to -0.9%.

Most US equity sectors were knocked down on the day, but the worst were Basic Materials (XLB) and Consumer Cyclical (XLY), both down -1.41% and Tech (XLK) down -1.36%. With record high oil prices ($WTIC closing +1.44/bbl to 118.07), the leader was Energy (XLE), but the gain was only +0.11%).

Airline stocks ($XAL) were trashed (-12.4%) as there is Street talk that possibly some hedge funds long the airlines have suffered. Difficulties in the airline industry were also highlighted by UAL Corp's (UAUA) $537 million 1Q loss and a plunge in stock price of -36.8% to a new 52-week low of 12.78, closing 13.55. The major airlines cannot make a profit at oil above about $80, and they have no alternative to turn to.

Also on the earnings front, AT&T (T) reported a +22% increase in net earnings ($0.57/sh), in line with expectations. (Cara 100) Millicom International (MICC) jumped +12.2% alter 1Q earnings surprised at $1.48 vs consensus $1.24.

On the worsening economic front, US Existing Home Sales for March fell -2%, as expected. Median home prices dropped -7.7% to $200,700 vs $217,400 a year ago.

The Euro hit a record high against the USD.

The long bond ($USB) was quiet at 117.16.

Precious metals prices this morning are soft.

Comments & Outlook

For those Bulls who think the banking industry crisis is over, or that the problems are contained to the US banks, I think you ought to consider the case of Britain’s second largest bank, the Royal Bank of Scotland. Yesterday the RBS announced they have to raise US$23.9 billion in capital asap. No other sale of stock in the UK has been close to that much. Other banks in the UK, as well as in Europe (see the UBS raise), will follow.

Do you recall a year ago when Royal Bank of Scotland was so unbelievably eager to acquire the Dutch mega-bank ABN Amro. Now the Scots have to say “wooden shoes, wooden head, wooden listen.” Now you see the problem.

This is a crisis, and it's not just about the mortgage market. The write-downs of bankers will likely, at the end of the day, be about $2 trillion. There is a credit contraction the likes of which the world has never seen, and that can not be positive for equities.

Yesterday I published excerpts from the UBS admission to shareholders. The report is an incredible disgrace for a banking industry that was falling all over themselves to grab the golden ring. Pure greed and gluttony.

It’s not as if others didn’t see this financial accident ready to happen in the past two years.
