Markets Re-cap
US equity markets enjoyed the biggest single-day rally in 70 years, but traders remain concerned that the enthusiasm was manufactured by bankers who are desperate to raise capital needed to replace reserves lost through write-downs related to their junk debt holdings called leveraged loans, loan commitments, and real estate and mortgage-backed securities.
The concern was expressed by the piddling volumes behind the stocks that lifted the most on the day. And why not when you see the price performance of stocks like FNM (+18.8%), LEH (+18.2%), FRE (+14.6%), HOV (+12.9%), and C (+11.7%)?
But, at the end of the session, the DJIA (+3.31% to 12654), S&P 500 (+3.59% to 1370.2), and Nasdaq Composite (+3.67% to 2362.8) was one for the record books.
The Toronto Exchange, however, gained even less than the previous day (+0.68% to 13440.7). Europe was almost as strong as the US: FTSE (+2.64% to 5852.6), CAC (+3.38% to 4866) and DAX (+2.84% to 6720), while Japan (+1.04% to 12656), and Hong Kong (+1.26% to 23137) also firmed up.
The enthusiasm seemed to come from market talk of capital raise ups by bankers, new money entering the market for the new quarter, and $USD stabilization. There was also massive short covering in Financials (XLF +7.0%) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY +4.5%) along with a rebound in Basic Materials (XLB +3.2%). Tech (XLK), Utilities (XLU) and Industrials (XLI) were also strong.
At the center of the storm were the changes and perceived changes at UBS (UBS +14.6%), which terminated its CEO and reported a US$12.0 billion 1Q loss, and a plan to seek shareholder approval to raise $15.1 billion. General Counsel Peter Kurer has taken the top spot of the world’s largest wealth manager.
Also Deutsche Bank announced it would write-off $4 billion related to junk debt holdings.
This news hammered the Euro early yesterday to $1.56 from Monday’s close at 1.579.
Even on a moonshot day as happened yesterday, there were losers. The Goldminers ($XAU) dropped -2.2% on the session after losing -2.0% the previous session. All the biggest losers of the Cara 100 stocks were precious metals related: ABX (-3.5%), GG (-3.3%), GFI (-2.1%), TCK (-1.9%) and SLW (-1.8%).
Clearly, the winners were the Broker-Dealers ($XBD +8.8%), Banks ($BKX +7.5%), Retailers ($RLX +5.8%), and REITS ($DJR +5.4%). The Semi-conductors rallied too ($SOX +4.2%).
Of the Cara 100 companies, the strongest were UBS (+14.6% after being up the prior session +3.7%), SanDisk (SNDK +9.7% after being up +6.2% the prior session), and Interactive Brokers (IBKR +10.8%).
On the economics front, the US manufacturing ISM index for March reported 48.6, up from February’s 48.3, but February Construction spending dropped -0.3%, which was the 5th straight decline.
Earlier today, the Asia-Pacific equity markets closed up, led by Japan (+4.21% to 13189), Hong Kong (+3.18% to 23872) and Australia (+2.41% to 5544.9), while India (+0.79% to 15750) and Shanghai (+0.56% to 3348) were more muted.
In open futures at 8:35am, the June Euro (1.5560), May Crude Oil (101.40) and June DJIA (12675) are a little stronger.
In the cash (spot) precious metals market at 8:43am ET (6:00am in brackets), gold at 885.80 (894), palladium at 443 (434), platinum at 1941 (1940) and silver at 16.80 (17.13) reflect a bit (but not much) of $USD weakness this morning.
Comments & Outlook
Yesterday, I remarked: “I called for this action on Sunday. I figured HB&B would be dumping commodities in their quest for survival. This is just the beginning. Save your ammo because in a couple months when we hit back with purchases of precious metals stocks and bullion, we will be having our own moonshot.”
Here’s what I was referring to in the Sunday WIR:
“Forex ReviewI was concluding in this space in the past couple weeks that the sell-off in the $USD and gains in precious metals was coming to an end, but this week there was another sell-off (-1.57%) to 71.61. Let’s see what next week brings after the end of the Japanese fiscal year."
On Monday and Tuesday, the Yen was down -0.32% on Monday and -2.17% on Tuesday. Furthermore, $GOLD plunged from $936.50 at Friday’s close to $921.50 on Monday and $887.80 on Tuesday.
So there you have it; yesterday’s Humungous rally was based on expansion of debt in Japan, ie, the Japanese Carry Trade, and the selling of commodity contracts.
But what did the banker CEO’s tell you was the root cause? They said yesterday’s rally was caused by strengthening in the asset-backed securities market!! What a disgraceful conduct by leading bankers. These people are losing their jobs by the day it seems, and now they are on their hands and knees pleading for the public to trust them that the assets they price in their own holdings do not need to be questioned, but aha the assets the public holds (ie, gold and high-yield money market paper) needs a haircut.
You know, this is deplorable. I say, their Boards of Directors can terminate all these bankers and replace the CEO office with the legal dept, as has been the case, and it still doesn’t add up to a hill of beans. They continue to flat out lie, and now think a lawyer is going to talk their way out of court.
I’ll be blunt about this. Yesterday’s Bear market rally was a joke. The comments of the leading bankers will be recorded and used against them in civil and criminal proceedings to come when this whole sick HB&B charade comes to a conclusion.
Yes, trading is about prices, and figuring out what is coming down the line in the days ahead. It’s not difficult to figure out what’s happening here, so as a trader there are profits to be made in the volatility. But as a self-respecting human being who cares about the society he lives in, something has got to be done to stop this charade.
The pretense is only going to get worse until extreme volatility pushes the People out of capital markets altogether and then these bankers can play with themselves and their Monopoly Money.
In the meantime we can watch the Bernanke testimony in Congress today, and listen to the spin on Financial Entertainment TV, I suppose.
Have a good one.
