Markets Re-cap
Monday was a quiet day in the capital market as traders are awaiting the Federal Reserve Bank to hold its monetary policy meetings today and tomorrow.
The DJIA (-20.11), S&P 500 (-1.47), and NASDAQ (+1.47) closed with little change.
Shares of Ford Motor (F +9.5% to $8.21) revved up on news of Kirk Kerkorian's 20 million share purchase decision (at $8.50/share). But Continental (CAL -1.5%) was grounded after nixing plans for a potential United Air merger. The Airlines ($XAL), however, gain +2.2% on the day.
Papers (-2.6%), Chemicals (-1.8%) and Goldminers ($XAU -1.3%) in the Basic Materials (XLB -0.57%) were the weakest industries, while Utilities (XLU -0.97%) was the weakest sector.
The strongest stock of the Cara 100 is Netease.com (NTES +5.6%), the consumer electronic games company in China. The Chinese Internet stocks also performed in bullish fashion yesterday. The Cara 100 losers were the Indian banks (IBN -3.9% and HDB -2.9%) and Silver Wheaton (SLW -2.5%).
After the close, Visa (V +0.7%) reported Q2 net income of $314 million ($0.52/share), which beat consensus estimates.
Crude Oil futures ($WTIC +0.24/bbl to 118.76) remained at extreme over-bought levels due to supply disruptions caused by strikes and violence in the North Sea and Nigeria.
$GOLD gained +$2.69/oz to 892.39, as the $USD lost -0.32% to 72.57 as currency traders flattened positions ahead of the FOMC meeting. The Euro gained a bit (+0.13%) to 1.5638.
The long bond (30-year $USB) gained +0.38% to 116.03. The T-Bill yield lifted +3.5% to 1.33 percent.
In the spot precious metals market at 7:26am ET today, gold, palladium, platinum and silver are down (886.12, 427, 1945 and 16.75 respectively) as the $USD is stronger. The Euro futures are down -0.47% to 1.5539.
Crude futures have dropped -0.86/bbl to 117.89 and the DJIA futures are down -45 to 12845.
Comments & Outlook
Things are quiet in capital markets early this week. But the $USD is pushing gold to a significant support position, where if the line doesn’t hold at around 875, I think the prospects are for a drop to about 800, possibly down to the 870 level that I have previously opined would be the cycle bottom of the short-term bear phase.
But this is a Bull market for precious metals, longer-term. A primary Bull it is called.
One of the delights for the goldbugs is what JP Morgan discussed early today in that there seems to be a prospect that the People’s Bank of China could do a one-off upwards revaluation of the Yuan (to counter the high inflation there), but until it happens nobody knows. These stories seem to come out always when the technical support and resistance lines are nearby and threatening.
