Daily Report for Tue, Mar 04, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Yesterday, the broad market indexes were flat, but that is not to say the action was quiet.
The goldminer stocks and the gold bullion prices soared as the US Dollar continued to fall under the weight of awful economic results in the US. At the same time, the weakest stocks were the Financials (XLF -1.36 pct) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY -0.22 pct).
But then you knew that would be the case before the day started as I wrote in the pre-open Daily Report:
Traders worldwide are concerned about the stability of the global banking system as well as the sharp pullback in consumer spending in the US.
The DJIA (-0.06 pct), S&P 500 (+0.05 pct) and Nasdaq Composite (-0.57 pct) show that on the surface not much was happening. Internally, however, the volatility was higher than normal. Traders are agitated.
The Nasdaq weakness can be explained by some selling in the semi-conductor stocks, with problems in the chips group, and the fact Research In Motion (RIMM) was removed from Goldman Sachs’ Conviction Buy List.
DRAM chipmakers Micron Technology (MU -4.65 pct to 7.17) and Qimonda (QI -4.65 pct to 4.31) as well as NAND flash chipmaker Sandisk (SNDK -2.12 pct to 23.05) led the decline in the broad semiconductor ($SOX -1-pct) industry. These charts look ugly.
SNDK hit a 52-week low. So too did LEH and UBS.
In futures action this morning, the $USD is weak and the March Euro is up to 1.5208. As a consequence, the April Crude Oil is at 102.775 and the March DJIA is down to a precarious 12159. All the precious metals are flying again: spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver are at 985.62, 585, 2277, and 20.35 respectively. Platinum is up +110/oz in the past 24-hours.
The Fed apparently is in emergency session.
Comments & Outlook
In January I recommended using the Cara Accumulation Zone/Buy Alert system to buy HSBC (HBC) down at 70 “for a move back to possibly 79 in the near term”. I recommended writing the short-duration 70 puts “to result in 100 pct earned income of the option premiums”.
(Jan. 24 Daily Report) Who else a week ago opined that it was time to buy a crashing HSBC (HBC) as 70 would be the floor and to write the 70 puts and buy on extreme weakness, which I listed again for action to be taken at the open on Tuesday. Well, HBC opened two days ago at 70.42.
The proof of concept is in the charts.
Yesterday, HSBC reported what appear to be superlative earnings and the stock (HBC) jumped +4.8 pct to close at $78.87 with a high of $79.37. Ring the cash register on the 100 pct gain in the put-writes and the $9 gain on the $70 stock purchase because it’s now time to sell. The price met our target. Moreover, HSBC earnings were probably not what they are cracked up to be.
You can put HBC on the Cara Conviction Sell List... (LOL)
