March 13, 2008
Daily Report for Thu, Mar 13, 2008
Markets Re-cap
The Bulls tried to fuel up the previous day’s rocket, but stocks died near the close. Profit-taking plus a record day for crude oil, despite excessive inventory, were partly to blame. The bigger picture focus on problems in the banking industry, slowing economies and growing inflation are the primary drivers.
The DJIA (-46.57 -0.38 pct to 12110.2), S&P 500 (-11.88 -0.90 pct to 1308.77), NASDAQ Composite (-11.89 -0.53 pct to 2243.87) and Toronto Composite (-47.2 -0.35 pct to 13297.4) all were led to the downside by the Energy sector (XLE -2.22 pct) and the Financials (XLF -1.67 pct). The FTSE closed earlier in the day before the sell-off in NY, up +1.51 pct to 5776.4.
As expected, the once Sheriff of Wall Street Eliot Spitzer resigned as Governor of New York State.
On the earnings front, Humana (HUM) lowered earnings guidance for 1Q and its full-year earnings projection from $0.85 to +$0.80 per share. Caterpillar (CAT) reaffirmed 2008 per-share earnings growth of +5 pct to +15 pct and revenue growth of +5 pct to +10 pct.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) ended the day at an all-time session closing record $108.57/bbl.
The $USD sank -1.24 pct to an all-time record low close of 72.33. The Euro, Pound and Yen gained +1.25 pct, +0.93 pct and +1.18 pct to 1.5518, 202.42 and 98.07 respectively.
The 30-year Treasury bond rallied +1.48 pct to 120.02 as the yield ($TYX) dropped -2.65 pct to 4.410. The 10-year yield dropped -3.14 pct to 3.483 and the 2-year dropped -4.55 pct to 2.494 pct, which is significantly below the US inflation rate.
Precious metals ($GOLD +0.46 pct to 980.50) gained with the $USD decline.
This morning the Asia-Pacific equity markets closed sharply lower: Nikkei 225 -428 points or -3.33 pct to 12433; Shanghai Composite -2.43 pct to 3971.26; Hong Kong -4.79 pct to 22301.6; Australia -2.22 pct to 5215.7; and India’s Sensex BSE 30 -4.79 pct to 15354.9.
In Europe at 7:53am, the FTSE, CAC and DAX are down a further –1.65 pct, -2.27 pct and -2.24 pct respectively.
In the futures market at this time, the futures are in extreme action: the March Euro is up to 1.5589; April Crude Oil is 110.725; and the DJIA March futures are down a couple hundred points from this time yesterday at 11973.
At 7:53am ET, the Spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver prices are up sharply to 996.10, 510.5, 2106, and 20.79.
Comments & Outlook
Inflation is one keynote this morning, especially inflation in Russia and the Far East. Another is the continuing liquidity crunch that cannot be controlled by the Fed at time. Traders believe that at least a dozen well known banks and a similar number of major hedge funds will fail in the next quarter.
This is, what I have been stating throughout the piece, a time to protect assets. The extreme rally on Tuesday was a trap set by Interventionists to help save HB&B. As I said: too little; too late.
I do think the market is panicking with regard to the $USD, $WTIC and $GOLD however.
