Daily Report for Sat, Mar 15, 2008
Markets Re-cap
On Friday, US equities were beaten down on worries that client failures to meet margin calls had threatened to take down the major Wall Street firm Bear Stearns, and with it a broad sweep of other firms that may not be able to keep the credit ring intact.
For 45 minutes, there had been an early advance on reports Bear Stearns’ "significantly deteriorated" liquidity position, according to CEO Alan Schwartz, would receive a cash injection from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York via JPMorgan Chase (JPM) that would ensure liquidity at the investment bank. Hope gave way to reality that probably there would be many such firms in trouble, and the market sold off hard.
At the end of the day, coincidentally the end of the week, the DJIA (-194.65 -1.60% to 11951.09), S&P 500 (-27.34 -2.08% to 1288.14), Nasdaq Composite (-51.12 -2.26% to 1288.14) and Toronto Composite (-190.66 -1.42% to 13252.84) all closed down sharply.
The best performing sector (Utilities XLU) was down -0.73% on the day, which shows the broad scope of the losses. The worst performer (Financials XLF) plunged -2.83% with the component Broker-Dealers ($XBD -8.6%) and Banks ($BKX -4.2 pct) down the most. In fact these are stunning one-day losses.
Not surprisingly, the worst performer of the Cara Global 100 (now an ex-Cara 100) was Lehman Bros (LEH) down -14.6% on +275% average daily volume as traders worried about the continued viability of Lehman. Facing severe liquidity issues, Lehman closed a new $2 billion committed unsecured three-year revolving credit facility, replacing its existing facility. The Company said the facility was "substantially oversubscribed" with 40 banks participating, co-led by JPMorgan Chase Bank and Citibank. The CEO of Lehman Bros sits on the Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which stepped into the market heavily on Friday to try to resolve the worst of the liquidity issues on Wall Street.
Also not surprisingly, the best performing industry groups on the day were the Goldminers ($XAU +0.5%) and the Papers ($DJUSPP +1.3%).
On the economic front, the reported headline and core US CPI for February was unchanged. The Reuters/U. of Michigan mid-month consumer sentiment index at 70.5 did improve slightly.
Another day of a falling US Dollar, setting a new all-time record closing low of 71.67, down -0.32, which is down -0.44%.
$GOLD settled up +5.70/oz at 999.50. Crude Oil ($WTIC) closed at 108.74, down -0.43/bbl, which is down -0.39 pct on the day.
The long-term 30-year US Treasury bond ($USB) lifted +1.31 (+1.10 pct) on the day as there was a capital flight to safety in the so-called riskless US debt instruments. Yields on the 30-year ($TYX), 10-year ($TNX) and 5-year ($FVX) dropped by -2.38%, -3.20% and -6.74%, respectively. As cash flooded into T-Bills, the yield plunged -13.85 pct to an incredibly low 1.12%.
At the close of the session, the Spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver prices were at: 1002.5, 509, 2066, and 20.63, respectively.
Comments & Outlook
I will reserve comment until the Week In Review on Sunday.
Today I decided to start using the % sign rather than the pct notation, which I started using many years ago when a % sign was a special symbol that didn’t always print out correctly on all systems. But, I am getting close to having much of this report computer-generated, saving me time for analysis and commentary, so I figured now was as good a time as any to change. Let’s see if old habits can be broken.
