Daily Report for Sat, Mar 01, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Economic reports along with disappointing corporate earnings in the US led to a massive sell-off in equities and a safe-haven flight to bonds on Friday.
The DJIA (-315 -2.51 pct to 12266.39), S&P 500 (-37.05 -2.71 pct to 1330.63), and Nasdaq Composite (-60.09 -2.58 pct to 2271.48) all plunged. Even the Toronto Exchange (-291 -2.10 pct to 13582.69) dropped despite higher precious metal prices. The Dow 30 is now down -2.9 pct for February.
Earlier in the day, the Asia-Pacific equity markets closed broadly lower and European shares finished substantively lower. In the Far East, Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped -2.32 pct to 13603, while most of the others were down between -1.0 and -1.4 pct.
In Europe, the FTSE, CAC and DAX dropped: -1.36 pct, -1.53 pct and -1.67 pct, respectively, which surprisingly was not as serious as the Thursday session.
There were no sectors in the US equity market that were up. In fact the usual defensive stalwarts Healthcare (XLV -1.4 pct) and Consumer Staples (XLP -1.9 pct) were beaten down. Absolutely crushed were Energy (XLE -3.32 pct), Financials (XLF -3.26 pct) and Basic Materials (XLB -3.22 pct).
There were no industries that lifted either. The ones of note that were hammered were the Broker-Dealers ($XBD -5.5 pct) and Banks ($BKX -4.2 pct).
There were only two (2) Cara 100 companies whose shares gained on the day. Ironically both are manufacturers of computer games: Netease (NTES +1.9 pct) and Electronic Arts (ERTS +0.1 pct). The reality is that twelve (12) plunged -5.0 pct or more in price, including the world’s largest brewer AmBev (ABV -7.6 pct), Lehman Bros (LEH -6.7 pct) and Whirlpool (WHR -6.6 pct).
On the economic front, US personal income increased +0.3 pct in January and spending rose +0.4 pct, both rising faster than anticipated. While spending came in above estimates, most of the gains came from a surge in inflation for the month. Real spending, which adjusts for inflation, was unchanged in January and December. The February Chicago Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) reading was worse than expected at 44.5, its weakest level since December 2001.
As Japan’s opposition parties boycotted the vote on the budget, saying there was not enough deliberation, parliament approved a FY2008 budget. Higher social security payments (+3 pct to Y21.78 trillion [US$209 billion]), required to offset the impact of inflation, were balanced by declines in defense spending, overseas aid and public works projects.
On the earnings front, American International Group (AIG) reported net income of $6.2 billion, which was -56 pct lower than the $14.05 billion earned in 2006.
The US Dollar remained flat (-0.03 pct) at 73.70, with a modest gain against the Euro, but hit a 3-year low versus the Yen. The Euro was down -0.12 pct to 1.5188 and the Yen +1.35 pct to 96.18.
Long-dated US Treasuries ($USB +1.67 pct to 119.69) were heavily bid for the second consecutive session as yields collapsed, pushing more pressure down on income-oriented investors who no longer can earn enough from bond yields to cover the destruction of wealth through inflation. The yield pct on the 30-year ($TYX), 10-year ($TNX), and 5-year ($FVX) US Treasury debt is now 4.420 (-2.96 pct on the day), 3.534 (-4.87 pct), and 2.509 (-7.86 pct). These are extreme moves, which reflect the rush out of equities into capital risk-free treasury bonds.
In direct response, the price of gold and silver soared again. $GOLD jumped +7.50 to 975.00. Traders are seeking to hedge inflation and the falling $USD.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) dropped -0.75/bbl to $101.84 on profit taking.
At the end of the week, the spot price of gold, silver, palladium and platinum closed at 973.70 (976.13 high on the day), 19.78 (19.94 high), 565 (584 high), and 2150 (2172.5 high), respectively.
In the futures at the close Friday, March Euros are at 151.85 (unchanged during the day), April Crude Oil 101.84, and the March DJIA is at 12306.
Comments & Outlook
The economic data and corporate earnings and forward guidance reports are quite negative. This is not a time to be contrarian.
Important technical support levels are being tested; long-term trend lines (MACD) are turning negative; and short-term cycles (RSI and Stochastics) have peaked this week. It is not a wise practice to try swimming against the ocean ebb tide.
