Daily Report for Fri, Mar 28, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Nervous traders claim they liked Oracle’s (ORCL) +30% quarterly earnings growth but not the revenue growth estimates. Then there was a stronger than anticipated weekly jobless claims report. That set up a volatile trading day.
The DJIA (-120 -0.98% to 12302.5), S&P 500 (-15.5 -1.17% to 1325.7) and Nasdaq Composite (-43.5 -1.91% to 2280.8) sold off at the open for an hour, regained strength for the next two hours and then sold off for the rest of the day, closing at or near the lows.
The only sector that “popped” was Utilities (XLU +1.14%), while Financials (XLF -1.56%), Industrials (XLI -1.1%) and Energy (XLE -1.0%) were the losers.
Of the industries, the Hospitals provided a modest safe haven, while the Broker-Dealers ($XBD -4.0%) were worst hit among many. Goldman Sachs (GS) was down. Merrill Lynch (MER) is coming under scrutiny for its upcoming CDO write-downs.
Reflecting a picture of the receding economy, the CEO of discount retailer Freds (FRED), which had been gaining traction since mid-January in the market, said he is “disappointed” and that his company is feeling the squeeze on the consumer, "The rapid changes in discretionary income for our customer base made us face some very tough decisions (including store closings and staff reductions)." Fred's Q4 sales fell nearly -8% Y/Y, and the company reported an earnings loss of -$4.4 million vs income of +$9.2 million a year ago.
ORCL (-7.2%) was worst hit, but so too was Research In Motion (RIMM -5.1%), which may be a forerunner to other leading Tech stocks. Other losers were PDA and GS. The winners were Russia’s VIP (+4.1%) and Brazil’s GOL (+3.8%).
On the economic front, weekly US Jobless claims fell by 9000 to 366,000. The final 4Q GDP estimate was unrevised at +0.6%, although many economists believe that December was flat to negative.
The Chicago Board of Trade increased trading margins for some of the soft commodities, meaning traders now have to put down more collateral to purchase contracts.
ConAgra Foods' (CAG) 3Q net earnings lifted +60%. The company will sell its trading and merchandising operations to the Ospraie Special Opportunities fund for $2.1 billion.
Goldman Sachs raised the communications technology group to Attractive from Neutral. Cisco (CSCO) was added to the firm's Conviction Buy List.
News of an attack on southern Iraqi pipelines caused Crude Oil ($WTIC) to rally again +1.6% to 107.58/bbl.
The $USD firmed up +0.34% to 71.70. The Yen (-0.50% to 100.17) and Euro (-0.15% to 1.5787) were the losers. The Pound and Loonie were down a bit.
$GOLD was flat at $954, after a significant lift the prior day as Crude Oil also gushed higher and the USD fell against the Euro.
The US Treasury bonds weakened a bit ($USB -0.54% to 118.17), while yields lifted on the 30-year, 10-year and 5-year instruments ($TYX +1.06% to 4.376) ($TNX +1.14% to 3.534) ($FVX +1.30% to 2.576).
T-Bill yields dropped -1.57% to 1.250, eliminating Wednesday’s move, reflecting less liquidity in the banking system yesterday.
Overnight, the Asia-Pacific markets were mostly very strong: Australia (-0.32% to 5401), Shanghai (+4.94% to 3580), Hong Kong (+2.74% to 23286), India (+2.38% to 16401) and Japan (+1.71% to 12820).
Inflation in Japan has been reported today as the worst in 10 years, and unemployment is rising as the economic picture worsens.
The same dismal picture is seen in Sweden, Slovak Republic and India.
At 6:50am ET, the European bourses are mixed but down a bit in the past 45 minutes: FTSE (+0.17%), CAC (-0.14%) and DAX (+0.20%).
This morning at 6:55am, spot gold (944.78), palladium (441), platinum (2034) and silver (18.38) are a bit stronger except for palladium.
In futures markets, the June Euro is at 1.5742, the May Crude Oil at 107.40, and the June DJIA contract stronger at 12368.
Comments & Outlook
The newsletter crowd is in high gear, spouting $1,000 gold and a crashing $USD again. I don’t see it, but time will tell.
Most of the economic data from all parts of the world show a slowdown. There is a double whammy with credit tightening at the banks. The recent central bank action was needed to restore order to markets, but just like a short sale sets up a future buy-back, so too does short-term credit expansion by a central banker.
I’m thinking today that maybe these better known newsletter writers are drinking their own lemonade. ‘Cut and paste’ seems to be the practice of the day. Moreover, I don’t think it is any kind of intellectual argument to rewrite stuff and show fancy charts.
But that’s just one person’s view.
