Daily Report for Fri, Mar 21, 2008
Markets Re-cap
On the final day of the holiday-shortened week, the Financials (XLF +7.20%) led the DJIA (+236 +1.95% to 12336), S&P 500 (+28 +2.16% to 1326.5), and Nasdaq Composite (+41 +1.85% to 2250.9), which all closed higher. Even the small cap Russell 2000 (+16 +2.40% to 680.10) was strong.
But the AMEX Composite closed down -0.03% and the Toronto Composite (+68 +0.53% to 12777) was a laggard, both on account of the sell-off in precious metals and commodity-related plays.
Japan was closed yesterday while the other Asia-Pacific equity markets were down on the session, led by Hong Kong (-759 -3.47% to 21108) and Sydney (-166.8 -3.12% to 5182.4). The FTSE (-50.4 -0.91% to 5495.2), CAC (-22.2 -0.49% to 4533.7) and DAX (-41.2 -0.65% to 6314.0) [the major European bourses] also traded down as the miners were crushed under the weight of plunging precious metals prices.
There were positive results out of the US consumer sector. The relatively few highlights were Nike (NKE +8.8% to 67.27), Carnival Cruise (CCL +8.8%) and JC Penny (JCP +8.0%) as this was clearly a Financials-led rally. The big banks of course were flying, led by Goldman Sachs (GS +7.9%) and UBS (UBS +7.0%).
On the economics front, there was a better-than-expected -17.4 Philly Fed manufacturing index reading for March, up from -24.0 for February. Not all the economic data was on the rise, however. Jobless claims increased by +22,000 last week, which was more than the market anticipated.
The US Dollar strengthened again as $USD closed up +0.77% to 72.75, clearly reflecting a reversal in trend. The major currency losers were the Euro ($XEU -1.22% to 1.5453) and the Cdn Loonie (--0.90% to 97.71)
The 30-year US Bond ($USB -0.19%) closed almost flat at 120.95. The yields on the 30-year ($TYX -1.35% to 4.165), 10-year ($TNX -1.01% to 3.328), and 5-year ($FVX -0.13% to 2.34) all fell as commodities contracts were delivered. The yield on the T-Bill fell -23.1% to 0.50, and at one point almost went off the board, giving signs of the deflation that hit Japan about 20 years ago.
Crude plunged below $100/bbl for the first time in many weeks, closing -$0.70 at 101.84.
$GOLD dropped a further -$25.30 -2.68% to close at 920.00 on the futures, but the GLD sunk below 900, closing at 89.91 and was as low as 89.80, reflecting 898-899 gold.
Spot this morning for gold, palladium, platinum and silver was: 910, 430, 1849 and 17.16. The low earlier on silver was 16.76.
Comments & Outlook
Contraction of credit by the Money Center Banks has led to a massive deleveraging of commodity contracts. Traders are being forced to take profits and losses.
Hedge funds that have been long Crude Oil and Precious Metals and short the USD have taken profits. While their cash balances now sit in T-Bills, there is almost zero income being paid, which is a small price to pay.
The losers, which I expect to see being unveiled next week, or more likely after the month-end, will be those Funds that had been long the $USD and short Crude Oil and Precious Metals. They had the right long-term strategy, but being under-margined forced many out of their positions. That final spike higher to $110 oil and $1029 gold sank many of these shorts who simply ran out of time.
Time is either friend or foe in the capital market wars. It is the great equalizer. Unfortunately, too many traders were positioned on the wrong side of market trends and cycles. We will soon be reading their obituaries in the financial media.
If there is a single objective that traders need to accomplish, it is the need to stay on the right side of trends and cycles. This is a message I repeat often.
