The DJIA (-1.75 pct to 12040), S&P 500 (-2.20 pct to 1304), Nasdaq Composite (-2.29 pct to 2220.7) and the Russell 2000 small cap index (-3.07 pct to 662.78) were hammered all day.

Jobless claims fell -24,000 to 351,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. The Mortgage Bankers Association reported that 5.82 pct of loans were delinquent by 30 days in the 4Q07, and 2.04 pct of all mortgages were in the foreclosure process.

The best performing sector on the day was Basic Materials (XLB -0.89 pct), while the worst were Financials (XLF -3.82 pct) and Consumer Discretionary (XLY -2.44 pct).

Goldminers ($XAU -0.27 pct) did not too bad, but the Broker-dealers ($XBD -4.88 pct) and Retailers ($RLX -3.97 pct) fared poorly.

Some retailers, including Wal-Mart (WMT +0.86 pct to $49.98), posted better same-store sales than originally expected.

Crude Oil ($WTIC) rallied to a new all-time high and closed up +0.95/bbl to 105.47. The $USD sank to $72.94 (-0.70 pct), setting a record low against the Euro, which closed up +0.64 pct to 153.60. The Yen was strong, up +0.95 pct to 97.18. The Loonie came up light by -0.19 pct to 101.41.

The 30-year Treasury Bond ($USB) closed up +0.35 pct to 117.95. The yield on the 10-year dropped -1.92 pct to 3.622, while the T-Bill yield fell -7.8 pct to just 1.365 pct.

Today the US Jobs Report is coming out. On Wednesday, the ADP employment report showed a -23,000 decline in private sector jobs, which is the first ever jobs decline they reported, so this report will be closely watched. The US economic news this week has been awful.

This morning, the Crude Oil, Euro and DJIA futures stand at 105.325, 1.5407, and 12065, respectively. The $USD is 72.70.

At 7:30am ET, Spot gold, palladium, platinum and silver is at 981.84 (976.30 low at 6am), 509 (495 low at 6am), 2119 (2061 at 6am), and 20.24 (19.94 at 6am), respectively. The prices at this time yesterday were 986.74, 537, 2228, 20.80.

Comments & Outlook

When the Chips are down (pun intended), the Money Center Banks have to be on the rise for the broad market indexes to have a chance to rally. The problem with chips is that the products they go into, like automobiles, appliances and consumer electronics, are not clearing the shelves, so manufacturing continues to fall. The producers have been hit by cost inflation, but have little pricing power.

Money is scarce everywhere. This is a credit tightening cycle regardless of what the banks are stating.

More pain to come, I think.
