Daily Report for Wed, Feb 13, 2008
Markets Re-cap
It was called Buffett’s Bail-out. After Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway offered to re-insure $800 billion in bonds backed by several insurers, equity prices were bursting with confidence.
The DJIA (+133.40 +1.1 pct to 12373) and S&P 500 (+9.73 +0.7 pct to 1348.9) climbed while the Nasdaq Composite (-0.02) closed flat. European equities closed strongly in every bourse (FTSE +3.5 pct; CAC +3.4 pct; and DAX +3.3 pct).
From the sectors, the Financials (XLF +2.75 pct) and Basic Materials (XLB +1.80 pct) were strongest, while Energy (XLE -0.06 pct) and Cons. Discretionary (XLY +0.19 pct) were weakest.
In the industry groups, REITs ($DJR +2.8 pct) and Banks ($BKX +1.5 pct) were up the most, while Goldminers ($XAU -3.0 pct) and Airlines ($XAL -1.9 pct) were down the most.
Among the stocks of the Cara Global Best 100 companies, Russia’s Vimpel-Communications (VIP +5.4 pct) and Electronic Arts (ERTS +5.4 pct) were strongest and mining companies Teck-Cominco (TCK -5.3 pct) and Goldcorp (GG -4.0 pct) were weakest.
From corporate news, GM (GM) swung to a 4Q loss and will offer its second round of buyout programs since 2006 to 74,000 UAW workers. Yahoo (YHOO) will cut about 1,000 jobs worldwide.
On the earnings front, Credit Suisse (CS) reported a 4Q write-down of $1.88 billion on sub-prime assets, leading to a -72 pct reduction in net earnings to CHF1.33 billion from CHF4.67 billion a year earlier. Total (TOT), Coca-Cola (KO) and Rio Tinto (RTP) all reported stronger earnings this morning, which is helping boost equities in the pre-open market.
Retailers ($RLX -0.74 pct) were weaker after the ICSC-UBS reported a drop of -0.7 pct in sales last week.
With the renewed confidence in Financials, speculators lost some interest in the commodities and the US Treasurys and moved into equities as the afternoon moved along. The trade-weighted US Dollar ($USD) finished a little lower (-0.30 pct), while the Euro ($XEU +0.52 pct to 145.90) and Pound ($XBP +0.63 pct to 196.13) gained. The Yen ($XJY -0.48 pct to 93.11) also lost ground.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) fell -0.73/bbl to $92.86/bbl.
$GOLD plunged -$15.50/oz to $911.10.
Early in the day today, the Nikkei 225 added +0.04 pct to 13021 and the Hang Seng gained 305.56 points.
At 8:22am ET this morning, spot prices for Gold and Silver were down -0.15 pct and -0.53 pct, while Palladium was flat. Platinum was up +0.68 pct.
March Euro was down -0.06 pct to 1.4570, while the March Crude was down -0.455/bbl or -0.47 pct to 92.325 about 30 minutes ago, but is now slightly up. The March DJIA futures were modestly up (+14), but getting a little stronger in the past half hour.
Comments & Outlook
I am always reluctant to give market headlines the benefit of the doubt. Headlines, if truth be known, are set by the editors, not the reporters of stories. But headlines, mostly, are spin, just like the 6-second sound bites on Financial Entertainment TV.
With that in mind, traders need to understand precisisely what Warren Buffett is guaranteeing and what he is not. The truth is often quite different to headline fiction.
I await the truth to come out on this. Obviously HB&B is struggling to maintain an even keel, and Buffett's steady hand on the helm is going to move them somewhat off the headwinds they have been facing.
Let the weather play out.
