Daily Report for Wed, Feb 06, 2008
Markets Re-cap
A very weak US ISM Non-Manufacturing Business Activity Report started the trading on a down note yesterday and as the session continued the action became even bluer.
At the close, the DJIA (-292.89), S&P 500 (-34.00), and Nasdaq Composite (-53.97) were hammered, leading to a 100% probability in fed futures for a cut in the Fed Rate in March.
Among the worst hit sectors, Energy (XLE -4.13 pct), Financial (XLF -4.06 pct), Utilities (XLU -3.01 pct), Basic Materials (XLB -2.88 pct), Consumer Discretionary (XLY -2.81 pct), Industrials (XLI -2.54 pct) and Technology (XLK -2.50 pct) were all down -2.5 pct or more. The best off, relatively speaking, were the Cons. Staples, down -1.36 pct.
Also in the economics news, the International Council of Shopping Centers-UBS Retail Chain Store Sales Index increased by +1.7 pct for last week, which was likely a small bump from what was a dreadful January.
On the earnings front, NYSE Euronext (NYX) 4Q net earnings more than tripled to $156 million vs $45 million a year earlier. Tyco International (TYC) reported a drop of -54 pct in fiscal Q1 neat earnings from $793 million a year earlier to $363 million.
With the weak ISM data, Crude Oil ($WTIC) dropped down to $88.41/bbl. The Weekly inventory data will be released today.
The $USD strengthened, which pulled the Price of Gold (-2.10 pct to 890.30) and Silver down sharply.
With the rampant selling of equities, there was a strong move to US Treasury paper.
The day started badly as Asia-Pacific markets dropped across the board, and then prices in Europe turned increasingly negative along with US equities; the DAX lost -3.4 pct and the FTSE 100 -4.0 pct on the day.
Today, the Asia-Pacific markets continued a huge sell-off: Australia down -3.0 pct; Hong Kong -5.4 pct; Japan -4.7 pct; and India down -2.8 pct.
European bourse prices are generally flat, awaiting the lead from New York, where DJ futures (+15), USD futures and US Bond futures are modestly higher. Precious metals are also up a bit, except for Platinum where the spot price is soaring.
Comments & Outlook
We live in interesting times. Humungous Bank & Broker is trying to poke chewing gum in the cracks in the dike. Central bankers and finance ministers must be burning up the telephone wires in their desperation to put a lid on the current ills of the banking system. The big miners are falling all over themselves to grab as much control as they can over resources owned by their peers. Fearing an inflation run potentially to the extreme, governments are trying to slow that process.
This is a time in history when traders will look back and ask themselves, why didn’t I make that big trade.
In the Spring of 1982, having been in the securities industry for maybe 16 months, I had been invited onto an Investors Roundtable with a couple very senior people, one of whom was a CEO of a broker-dealer who had been Energy Minister, and the other the Exec VP of Finance for one of the world’s major natural resources conglomerates. I was a fill-in for the head of one of the major mutual fund companies, a man who had been ranked number one technical analyst on Bay Street for many years. The publisher knew me and asked if I would join them at the Toronto Press Club.
At the time, the Bear market has zapped the strength of most every trader since short selling and put options were not a big thing at that point. It was mostly a case of liquidity drying up versus short selling which is a contract for buyers to come back into the market at some future point. It was, in fact, starting to look like the long drawn-out Bear of 1973-74.
We talked around a table led by moderator Frank Kaplan, the man who in my book I say was my writing mentor. The discussion was casual but the cameras were clicking all around, which I found distracting.
The others were talking of things like the need to be nimble and the Rule of 72, all of which is great stuff for the classroom, but I was determined to call it the way I saw it. I said that interest rates were almost 20 pct, and the yield on the Canada Savings Bond was 15 pct, which was ludicrous, obviously pointing us to the close proximity of the equity cycle bottom and the Trade of the Generation, which was to buy that Canada Savings Bond for a Registered Retirement Savings Plan, to the extent anybody could. I talked about a waterfall in rates that was about to happen because the back of inflation had been broken.
That was April 1982; the 5000-word article was published in May, and a couple weeks later in June the equity Bear in Canada died, followed by the US equity Bear doing likewise in mid-August. The Bond market soared. Can you believe that anybody could earn 15 pct with zero risk from a government as strong as Canada’s? Well, it happened once. And that is my point in that traders now have – or will soon have – another Trade of (the next) Generation.
Don’t miss it.
