Daily Report for Tue, Feb 12, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Stocks fell about -175 Dow points for about 40 minutes from the open yesterday following Yahoo's (YHOO) rejection of Microsoft (MSFT), but rebounded through to the close based on speculation in commodities and commodity-sensitive stocks.
The DJIA (+57.88 +0.48-pct 12240), S&P 500 (+7.84 +0.59-pct 1339.1), and Nasdaq Composite (+15.21 +0.66-pct 2320.1) closed higher.
Bank of America (BAC) and Chevron (CVR) will join the Dow Jones 30 starting February 19th, replacing Altria (MO) and Honeywell (HON).
Yahoo's board rejected Microsoft's hostile takeover bid, stating the offer vastly undervalues the company.
AIG increased its October and November loss estimate of its credit derivatives to $4.88 billion, causing the stock price to plunge -11.7 pct, which sets a negative path for other insurer stocks.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) surged $1.82/bbl (+1.98 pct) to $93.59. The move was attributed to the extremely cold weather in the North-east US and the fact Valero (VLO +0.3 pct) had shutdown its Delaware refinery.
Wheat soared to a new all time high on supply concerns. Platinum soared +59.20 (+3.17 pct) on the day.
The $USD dropped a bit (-0.08 pct) to 76.56 and was little changed against the Pound and Euro. The Yen to the USD bumped up by +0.46 pct) to 93.56.
US Treasurys had a small lift (USB +0.47 pct to 119.28) as yields fell ($TYX -0.77 pct to 4.405) ($TNX -0.99 pct to 3.618) with more flight-to-safety moves on renewed credit fears.
In the US sectors, the XLE (Energy) move up the most (+2.58 pct) and the XLF (Financials) fell by -2.21 pct.
Among industry groups, the $XNG (Nat Gas) jumped +3.31 pct and the $BKX (Banks) dropped -1.11 pct. $RLX (Retailers) lifted +2.37 pct.
Retailer Kohl’s (KSS +5.4 pct) had a good day. So too did food processor Perdigao (PDA +6.7 pct) and steelmaker Gerdau (GGB +6.6 pct), both of Brazil, and Canada’s Research In Motion (RIMM +5.3 pct).
On the downside, China’s offshore oil company CNOOC (CEO -3.6 pct), plus a slew of banks (HDB -3.0 pct, LEH -3.0 pct, UBS -2.6 pct and HBC -2.2 pct) were weak.
European shares ended lower with the FTSE down -76 (-1.32 pct) to 5707.7, and the CAC and DAX of France and Germany down -.57 pct and -0.35 pct respectively. Japan and China's markets were closed for the lunar new year holiday.
This morning at about 8am ET, spot gold (-0.47 pct), silver (-0.04 pct) and palladium were down, but platinum (+8) was strong, still.
The March Euro was up +0.26 pct, while March Crude dipped -0.90 pct. The March DJIA showed +22.
Overnight in Asia-Pacific markets, Hong Kong closed up +1.4 pct and Australia +1.2 pct. At 8:25am ET, the FTSE, CAC and DAX are up +2.1 pct, +2.3 pct and +1.9 pct respectively. The opening looks positive.
Comments & Outlook
When I look at some of the futures market price trends, I am reminded of pre-Black Monday 1987, where trading became extremely speculative. As Marshall McLuhan might say, ‘the market is the message’.
In three weeks, the price of Platinum has gone parabolic, soaring from $1500 per once to almost $2000. This move is mostly about production issues in South Africa, exchange traded funds (the PHPT.L that began to trade on the London Stock Exchange last April 24), and futures on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM). This is not good because the platinum price is not based on fundamentals.
Yes, the market is the message. It has lost its ability to balance value and price. Price today is basically where interventionists and manipulators want it to be.
As I say, traders of securities and futures are not looking to join a rigged casino game.
