Markets Re-cap
On Wednesday, bond markets and stock markets in Europe and North America came to a stand-still as traders breathlessly awaited testimony by Fed chairman Ben Bernanke in Congress. The only firm decision they had made in advance was to drive the price of the $USD lower.
There was early weakness in share prices due to very negative economic data, but relief came later after the government announced it will lift cap limits on mortgage holders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. There solution to the economic problems was to facilitate an increase in personal debt.
On the economic front, the US Commerce Department reported durable goods orders dropped in January -5.3 pct to a seasonally adjusted $212.80 billion. Single-family home sales in January fell -2.8 pct to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 588,000, which is the lowest number in 13 years.
The European Commission announced it has fined Microsoft (MSFT) EUR899 million for failing to comply with a 2004 antitrust ruling.
By day’s end, the DJIA (+0.07 pct to 12694.8), S&P 500 (-0.09 pct to 1380.02) and Nasdaq Composite (+0.37 pct to 2353.78) were flat, and so was the Toronto Exchange (-0.14 pct to 13778.38). Earlier in the day, the FTSE, CAC and DAX of Europe were also flat at -0.18 pct, -0.09 pct, and +0.17 pct, respectively. Before that, the Asia-Pacific markets were quite strong as the Nikkei 225 of Japan was up +1.49 pct, the Shanghai Composite +2.26 pct, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng +3.24 pct and the All Ords of Australia +1.68 pct gained. India’s BSE 30 was flat.
Sectors up were Healthcare (XLV +0.45 pct) and Financials (XLF +0.44 pct), while Utilities (XLU -2.40 pct) dropped.
The Goldminers ($XAU +2.44 pct) rallied, while Nat Gas stocks ($XNG -1.83 pct) dropped.
From the Cara Global 100 companies, Goldman Sachs (GS +4.7 pct), Gerdau (GGB +4.0 pct) and ABB (ABB +4.0 pct) were strong, while Vimpel (VIP -3.0 pct) and Costco (COST -3.0 pct) dropped.
With a larger-than-expected build in inventories, as reported, Crude Oil ($WTIC) dropped to 99.64/bbl from 100.88 the day before.
During the session, gold futures ($GOLD) jumped +12.10/oz to $961.00, which was a catch up of the prior move in spot prices. Prior to this move, spot gold had run to 959.10 and solver to 19.41.
This morning at 8:38am ET, the price of spot gold, silver, palladium and platinum is at: 958.4 (958.8 at 7:00am), 19.23 (19.2188 at 7:00am), 543 (539 at 7:00am), and 2115 (2105.5 at 7:00am), respectively. The USD has weakened in the past 90 minutes.
The March Euro futures is at 151.14 (1.5089 at 7am) ; April Crude is 100.10 (99.725) ; and the March DJIA is 12641 (12659). So, as the USD weakened, so too did the US equity futures as a result of oil and precious metals being pushed higher.
Comments & Outlook
“Remember, gold is the last dancer off the floor, and then the music stops…” You see, the dance is all about liquidity. When the business cycle (ie, corporations) cannot provide it, the G-7 central banks have to, and they do until they can’t. They are getting close to that point now because without higher personal incomes or an ability to draw down savings, Mom & Pop can no longer fill up the gas tank in the car (as a result of $100 crude oil), pay their house mortgage, etc, and the rest of their bills, including rising food costs. They are tired of getting to the end of the month a dollar short.
In fact Mom & Pop is just plain tired. They are tired of fighting to stay employed and tired of fighting terrorism. So, it’s not surprising they have stopped buying new cars and newer, bigger homes, etc., and that America’s manufacturers and retailers are suffering as a result.
So what can the Treasury Secretary and the Fed Chairman do other than print money (ie, create debt) to facilitate corporate share buy-backs and bigger dividends (to wealthy people) in order to pump share prices and bond prices that make it look like America is prospering when it isn’t.
But Mom & Pop knows better, and they want change. They know that as the Dollar drops in price relative to international currencies, the cost of living increases. Those on fixed incomes know that as bond yields drop, their incomes drop.
The people are getting desperate and they now refuse to listen to politicians and their agents and friends in big business and media who tell them the economy is strong. And when people stop believing, as consumer confidence polls show, they stop providing the liquidity the economy needs.
The banks know this. In fact the bankers know how serious are the problems, but they just don’t want to fess up. So, the bankers have gone to Washington and pleaded for help. They put their CEO Henry Paulson into the Treasury Secretary position in the White House to see they’d get a friendly reception. And Henry has now traveled the world to open the spigots of most of the Sovereign Wealth Funds to help inject capital into his friends’ banks.
But there is not much more that can be done. On Tuesday morning, there was another liquidity injection, which has plunged the $USD to a record low, almost 73 cents to par. A couple hours later, the price of oil and precious metals zoomed. Crude oil zoomed from about 99 to almost 101. A year ago it was 51. Gold zoomed from 934 to 959, silver from 18.10 to 19.41, palladium from 511 to 549.5 and platinum from 2116 to 2149, all within 24 hours. Nobody is fooling anybody any more.
The banks are cooked; the Fed is cooked. And there was Dr. Ron Paul telling it like it is. I hope you watch the video of his exchange yesterday with Chairman Bernanke. In fact, watch any time this man speaks if you want to know why America is in trouble today.
When the Fed can absolutely not drive the USD down lower without Americans screaming “no mas, no mas!” I think we will be witness to a stock market crash that will go down in history as one of the worst. All the vested interests of global wealth managers, desperate to hold up price levels, will not be able to do the job.
But rather than do the job they should have, which would have been to sell stock for the past year and a half, they will simply turn to Mom & Pop, whose pensions and other wealth they manage, and say, “I’m sorry; I didn’t see this coming.”
In 40 years, I have never seen politicians, bankers and corporate leaders try to change the laws of markets like they have today. It’s an impossible task because we – you and I – are the market and the market is driven by the laws of nature. It’s not going to change.
The word of the day has been "volatility" as in "too much". Soon it will be "liquidity" as in "not enough".
