Daily Report for Sat, Feb 16, 2008
Markets Re-cap
With stagflation in the news with most of the US economic data pushing the envelope, traders are surprised that major market index levels are holding up so well.
US Treasuries continue to benefit, but it’s hard for equity Bulls to rally when the economic data is so bad. The New York Empire State Manufacturing Index in January plunged to a negative -11.72, a massive decline from a positive +9.03. This is the first negative reading since May 2005 for the NY Index. In addition, US import prices for January lifted +1.7 pct, suggesting record energy prices are pushing down profit margins more than originally thought.
The DJIA (-28.77 -0.23 pct to 12348), and the Nasdaq Composite (-10.74 -0.23 pct to 2321.80) did move steadily down as the session progressed, but still closed higher on the week. European equity markets finished lower and Asia-Pacific markets were mixed.
The Financials (XLF +1.59 pct) and Utilities (XLU +1.40 pct) were strongest on the session, while the ones holding the market down were the Industrials (XLI -0.62 pct) and Technology (XLK -0.35 pct).
The US Retail sector ($RLX -0.16 pct) was soft on account of lower guidance from Best Buy (BBY), which cut its fiscal-year earnings forecast to $3.05 to $3.10 from $3.10 to $3.20.
Financial Guaranty Insurance will request permission from the New York State Insurance Dept to be split into two, which seemed to be a positive discussion among traders.
Within the industry groups, the Broker-Dealers ($XBD +1.01 pct) were up while the Semi-conductors ($SOX -1.61 pct) were weak.
On the economics front, the data that was released Friday showed a sharp rise in US consumer inflation expectations, which points to trouble for the reports upcoming on CPI (next Wednesday) and PPI (the following Tueday).
The $USD dropped (-0.15 pct) to 76.04, while the Euro ($XEU +0.18 pct) lifted to 146.68, but the Pound was weak (-0.57 pct) at 195.85. The Canadian Dollar ($CDW -0.68 pct to 99.33) was also weak. The Yen gained +0.32 pct to 92.90.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) settled in -0.10 pct at $95.45/bbl, down a bit on the day.
Despite modest $USD weakness, gold futures dropped sharply (-4.70/oz -0.52 pct) on profit taking. In the spot market, gold closed the week with a loss on Friday of -7.20 to 902.10 and silver was down on the day -0.28 (-1.62 pct) to 17.03. Palladium was quiet at 438.5.
The huge news in precious metals trading, however, is platinum, where on Friday the price, which earlier went parabolic, skyrocketed a further +90 (+4.33 pct) on the day to 2078. On Wednesday, spot plat was 1922. That’s a gain of +8.12 pct in three sessions. Reminds one of 1980 in the gold market.
In the Friday Daily Report, I wrote: “The big news, however, is the short squeeze underway in spot Platinum, which was up +38 to 2026 at 6:00am ET, but by 7:16am is up a stunning +63 to 2051. The price was at 1922 on Wednesday morning.” So there was a further gain of +27 before the close.
Other markets may be dull, but platinum keeps on shining. For now anyway.
Well actually, the US bond market also had a big lift on Friday following the bad econ data. The US Treasury long bond ($USB +1.37 pct) jumped to 118.00, while its yield ($TYX) fell -1.25-pct to 4.595 pct. The yield ($TNX) on the 10-year bond fell -1.00-pct to 3.780 pct.
The biggest percentage move Friday in the debt markets though was in T-Bills where the yield ($IRX) dropped -4.05 pct to 2.130 pct in another flight-to-safety following more ugly economic data.
Comments & Outlook
Bear markets should not stop traders from seeking new opportunities.
On Friday, Roth Capital reiterated their Buy rating on the shares of Spreadtrum (SPRD $8.80 $365 mil market cap), as they believe about 50% of the new 3G phones ordered by China Mobile (CHL) contain Spreadtrum's product. In that case, China Mobile could generate $10-$20 mil in 2008 revenue for Spreadtrum.
NO POSITION. NO RATING. But SPRD could be an interesting play on the China market. The share price has tumbled, and the company admits to marketing challenges, but it is profitable and growing rapidly.
Perhaps we’ll look into SPRD as a candidate for the Cara 100 small and microcap rapid growth company list, although it’s not there now.
On another topic, I started to look into the Carbon Credits Market this weekend. I am hoping to see more discourse on this important matter.

Perhaps there are experts among us? If so, please send me mail to bill [at] billcara.com.
I feel strongly that the Financial sector will under-perform for as many years as it takes HB&B to clean up their situation in the syndicated debt markets and credit derivatives markets. I also feel that the problems with hydro-carbons will hold back the Energy sector.
In the meantime, traders are looking at developing trends in planet ecology, the alternative energy market, and the green theme. This is the new focus for capital investors; it’s no longer HB&B and Big Oil.
