Markets Re-cap
The DJIA (-64.87 -0.53 pct to 12182) and S&P 500 (-5.62 -0.42 pct to 1331.29) moved in one direction whereas Nasdaq Composite (+11.52 +0.52 pct to 2304.85) went the other to close the week.
Apparently the NYSE fell on recession fears while tech-heavy Nasdaq was lifted on the backs of (i) Cognizant Technology’s (CTSH +16.7 pct) results, which beat consensus earnings estimates and also guided strongly for the current quarter, and (ii) Amazon.com's (AMZN +3.6 pct) share repurchase program.
Regarding Cognizant, Knobias reported:
Cognizant (CTSH), an IT outsourcer, reported Q4 EPS of 32c, compared with analysts' consensus estimate of 31c. Cognizant's Q4 revenue was $600M, versus the consensus of $594.4M. The company provided Q1 EPS guidance of 36c, versus the consensus of 32c. "Our fourth quarter...financial performance was driven by strong growth across our business segments, service offerings and geographic regions," said Cognizant CEO Francisco D'Souza. A number of research firms' outlooks on Cognizant were very positive after the company released its earnings and guidance. Citigroup believes that Cognizant's guidance is conservative, but the firm thinks that strong bullish comments on the company's outlook should lower short interest in the company and clear the way for a solid performance by the stock this year. Citigroup finds the stock's valuation compelling. Banc of America thinks Cognizant's solid quarter and guidance should lessen investors' concerns about the slowdown's effect on the company. Cognizant's results and guidance indicate that offshore outsourcers have barely begun to exploit their potential, the firm added. Cognizant's stock had jumped 17.05% to $31.93 in mid-morning trading.
The US sector leaders on the day were Basic Materials (XLB +2.13 pct) and Energy (XLE +1.47 pct), while the losers were Financials (XLF -1.67 pct), Utilities (XLU -0.79 pct) and Technology (XLK -0.76 pct).
Within the US industry groups, the worst hit were the Banks ($BKX -2.3 pct) and REITs ($DJR -3.2 pct). The winners were the Goldminers ($XAU +3.64 pct) and Natural Gas stocks ($XNG +3.07 pct).
During the session the international country ETF’s that did best and worst were: Canada (EWC +1.62 pct) versus Italy (EWI -2.38 pct) and Japan (EWJ -2.53 pct).
The domestic exchange trading results for Friday included: the Nikkei 225 -1.44 pct to 13017, the FTSE 100 +1.05 pct to 5784, CAC -0.30 pct to 4709.6, and DAX +0.50 pct to 6767.3.
On the deals front, MBIA (MBI) got a boost after announcing they will raise more capital than originally planned. Nucor (NUE) announced they intend to purchase David J. Joseph for $1.44 billion.
On the earnings front, Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) reversed course from a EUR3 million loss a year earlier on a pro-forma basis to a Q4 adjusted operating profit of EUR303 million.
On the economic data front, US wholesale inventories grew at their fastest rate in over a year, up +1.1 pct at a seasonally adjusted rate to $411.60 billion. Traders would attribute that negative to a weak sales month in December.
With Nigerian shipment halts and expected cold weather in the Northeast, the Crude Oil contracts ($WTIC) surged ahead +3.66/bbl (+4.15 pct) to 91.77/bbl.
That move pulled down the $USD contracts by -0.34 pct to 76.62, and sent precious metals soaring. By the end of the session, $GOLD contracts closed up +12.30 (+1.35 pct) to 922.30.
US Treasury yields fell as a result of traders getting nervous and shifting to safe-haven holdings like the US 30-year bond ($USB +0.77 pct to 118.72). The yields on the 30-year US paper ($TYX -1.36 pct to 4.439) and 10-year ($TNX -2.19 pct to 3.654) dropped accordingly.
Spot precious metal prices boomed through to the midnight close: Gold +13.12 to 922.80, Silver +0.36 to 17.16, and platinum +45 to a roaring 1887. Palladium was flat at 435.
Comments & Outlook
Links & Charts
There were two 52-week lows in the Cara 100 on Friday. UBS (UBS) dropped -2.8 pct to 36.84. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) fell -0.5 pct to 42.16.
The GSK selling Friday was on +106 pct higher volume than the daily average. The opening on Friday at 40.90 provided an excellent entry point. On Thursday, GSK fell -7.6 pct on even higher volume, so the stock is getting washed overboard. But GSK is now in the long-term Cara Accumulation Zone for four days. Traders ought to consider writing the 40 puts on any weakness.
GSK had prices as low as the high 30’s only at the bottom of the 2000-2002 Bear market, and before that back in late 1996.
For UBS, the stock is back to trading in the 2004-2005 range of prices, which is probably reasonable. But the company is still the premier high and very high net worth investor wealth manager. If only they could sop the bleeding in their credit market operations. Nevertheless, which is ironic since their chief lawyer wrote me to threaten a lawsuit for publishing UBS material without authorization, this is a company that will stay in the Cara 100.
I will frame the legal letter as a badge of honor (and dishonor on my part, for which I agreed to clean up my act). It’s an honor in that HB&B are obviously tracking me now that I have well over 100,000 investors reading the blog.
With the serious bump in precious metals prices yesterday, were you watching the Noront (NOT.V +11.21 pct to 4.86)?
Apparently the buzz at the Duke pub where the beer was overflowing was that a Boston-based newsletter sent out a strong recommendation.
As for me, I came to an agreement a week ago to join the private placement selling syndicate of IBK Capital to do future financings of Noront and the other McFauld’s Lake companies with capital from offshore accounts.
My conclusion after discussions with the local mining crowd and being personally acquainted with the major players is that at least one major mine will develop, and probably more, in the “Ring of Fire”. Years from now, the area could become another Sudbury-type producer. Our “troop” of Caraistas will certainly cover these companies at the upcoming PDAC.
