Daily Report for Fri, Feb 15, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Yesterday was a lethal combination of Drs. Doom and Gloom visiting the Senate Banking Committee plus Europe’s biggest bank and the world’s biggest private wealth manager, UBS, reporting a full-year loss and a 4Q loss of $11.22 billion after taking $13.7 billion in sub-prime write-downs. It is a surprise to many that the losses in equity markets weren’t bigger.
After remarks in Congress by Messrs Bernanke and Paulson of a slowing economy, the $USD lost its early strength, and European markets weakened to close mostly flat. Asia-Pacific markets earlier had soared.
The DJIA (-175.26 -1.40 pct to 12371), S&P 500 (-18.35 -1.34 pct to 1346.86), and Nasdaq Composite (-41.39 -1.74 pct to 2332.54) moved steadily down as the session progressed.
Airlines ($XAL -3.93 pct) and Retailers ($RLX -2.84 pct) were beaten down, which canceled out the momentum built in the pre-market from declines in the trade deficit and weekly jobless claims report headlines.
On the economics front, the US Labor Department reported weekly jobless claims fell -9,000 to 348,000 in the week ended Feb. 9. Also, the US reported the international trade deficit for December shrunk to $58.76 billion, where rising exports offset record energy import costs. Interest rates rose after the trade deficit and weekly jobless claims reports.
Also on the earnings front, Comcast (CMCSA beaten down at the open, but recovered to close flat) reported net earnings jumped +54 pct to $602 million.
The world’s major producer of uranium, Cameco Corp (CCJ +2.4 pct) was upgraded by RBC Capital and downgraded by Friedman Billings on the same day.
Diageo (DEO +4.1) was bubbling. Companhia de das Bebidas Americas (AmBev ABV -4.6 pct) lost its froth. UBS -8.2 pct lost considerable goodwill and ABB (ABB -4.8 pct) lost its CEO in a very interesting (Did he quit or was he fired?) story.
European equities closed on the quiet side: FTSE at 5879; CAC at 4858; and DAX at 6962. Traders had been awaiting the testimony by Messrs. Bernanke and Paulson yesterday morning, and everybody was on hold.
From the sectors, the Healthcare (XLV -0.42 pct) and Consumer Staples (XLP -0.51 pct) were down on the session, but strongest, which is expected from the defensive sectors in a falling market, while Tech (XLK -1.98 pct) and Financials (XLF -1.93 pct) were weakest, also as expected.
In the industry groups, Oil ($XOI +0.25 pct) was the only one up on the day, not surprising given the run-up this week in oil prices, while Airlines ($XAL -3.93 pct), down also because of skyrocketing oil prices, was in fact down the most. There were few winners on the session.
Bond prices dipped again. The trade-weighted US Dollar ($USD) also finished weaker (-0.31 pct to 76.15), while the Euro ($XEU +0.39 pct to 146.41) and Pound ($XBP +0.26 pct to 196.97) were higher. The Yen ($XJY +0.16 pct to 92.60) gained slightly. The Cdn Loonie ($CDW) dropped -0.27 pct to 100.01.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) bubbled up +2.29 pct to $95.55/bbl, well up from Monday’s close of $92.86. Apparently there are global supply concerns, which tend to be highlighted whenever the $USD dips lower.
$GOLD flat-lined at $910.80.
Early in the day today, international equity markets are quiet. The Nikkei was closed. The March DJIA futures are flat. The March Euro is at ~1.4678 and Crude at 95.50.
At 7:16am ET this morning, spot prices for Gold (909.78) and Silver (17.36) are a little higher than yesterday morning, and Palladium is at 433, also quiet.
The big news, however, is the short squeeze underway in spot Platinum, which was up +38 to 2026 at 6:00am ET, but by 7:16am is up a stunning +63 to 2051. The price was at 1922 on Wednesday morning.
Comments & Outlook
There is not much to say about the trends and cycles of markets today. The flight to safety (ahead of another liquidity crunch) continues. Yields on US Treasuries popped again yesterday (+3.12 pct to 4.653 pct on the 30-year; +3.36 pct to 3.818 pct on the 10-year; and +0.45 pct to 2.220 pct on the T-Bills). The 30-year US Bond ($USB) dropped again, by -1.40 pct to 116.41. It was 118.50 on Tuesday.
I feel that once the parabolic Platinum market cracks, the precious metal group as well as the Crude Oil price will fall in price and the $USD will start to rally again.
The market is pricing in a Fed rate cut by -25 basis points (64 pct likely) to -50bp (34 pct likely). It’s probable that Bernanke will lower to 2.00 pct, which is higher than Greenspan’s Folly at +1.00 pct, but not a solution, in any event, to what ails the financial system. The only solution there is more write-downs and quarterly losses and capital raise-ups (read that extra dilution) for HB&B. That takes time. In that time, equity prices will see a lot more downside.
