Daily Report for Wed, Jan 09, 2008
Markets Re-cap
A serious sell-off yesterday afternoon finally killed the US equity Bull.
The DJIA -238.42 (-1.86 pct) to 12589 dropped well below the crucial technical support level of 12800. The S&P 500 (-1.84 pct to 1390.19), Nasdaq (-2.36 pct to 2440.51), and Russell 2000 Small Caps (-2.64 pct to 704.86) all caved in.
The Dow Transports, hurt by another rally in the Oil market, dropped -3.19 pct.
Leading the downside push were the Financials (XLF -3.64 pct), Technology (XLK -2.65 pct) and Industrials (XLI -2.23 pct). Consumer Discretionary (XLY -1.94 pct) was not far behind.
Airlines ($XAL), caught up in a double whammy of higher fuel costs and less demand from a slowing economy, plunged -8.0 pct on the day.
Banks ($BKS -4.0 pct), Broker-Dealers ($XBD -4.69 pct) and REITs ($DJR -3.74 pct) were extremely weak.
Telecoms ($XTC), led by AT&T (T), dropped -3.1 pct.
Technology losses were widespread: Disk Drives ($DDX -3.9 pct), Hardware ($HWI -3.6 pct), Computer Tech ($XCI -3.0 pct) and Semi-conductors ($SOX -2.7 pct) were all significant losers.
Housing was back in focus today. The Housing Index ($HGX -4.36 pct) plummeted after KB Home's (KBH) 4Q net loss was reported to have fallen to -$772.7 million vs a net loss of -$49.6 million a year earlier. In addition, November US Pending Home Sales fell -2.6 pct, with the largest deterioration taking place in the Northeast.
With all the talk of the need for an urgent FOMC rate cut, traders sent gold and oil prices surging. Crude Oil ($WTIC +1.24/bbl +1.30 pct to 96.33) and Gold ($GOLD +18.30 +2.12 pct to 880.30) moved in direct response to anticipated action by the Fed on Jan 30, and likely by the Bank of England and European Central Bank on Thursday at 7:00am and 7:45am ET respectively.
In nominal dollars, Gold has hit a record high.
The $USD (-0.07 pct to 76.11) pulled back against the Euro (+0.12 pct), but lost against the Yen (-0.58 pct).
Earlier today, Asian markets closed mixed. Shanghai gained +0.91 pct, Hong Kong +1.86 pct, and Tokyo +0.49 pct. Australia -0.74 pct was a loser. India was flat.
In Europe, at 7:08am ET, all bourses are down. Germany's DAX -0.43 pct and Britain's FTSE 100 -1.13 pct are leading the way.
Spot gold is down a bit, but spot silver has jumped +0.15 to 15.97. Platinum and palladium are tight.
The March-08 e-miNY Crude Oil futures are up +0.67/bbl to 97.00.
The March DJIA contract is up +49 to 12700, indicating an attempt to recover some of yesterday afternoon’s lost ground. Let’s see what 11:00am brings.
Comments & Outlook
Change is being recognized. Traders now see that the Bear has taken down the Bull.
As the market cycles through a series of lower lows and lower highs, some of you will be challenged. The most difficult step will be that you now face the prospects of having to make decisions or else lose wealth to falling equity prices as well as inflation.
Don't think of this period in the market cycle as a negative one. Prices go up. Prices fall. We can benefit from both.
But we must stay connected. Our one hundred thousand pairs of eyes are far more observant than yours or mine.
Something I recognized yesterday was that US auto manufacturers have decided to promote their decision to seek growth in foreign markets. No longer are they hiding the fact that they have milked the taxpayer into paying so much to keep local factories open, they are shutting them down and investing abroad, where they expect Âľ of their growth.
They also obviously don’t care where they promote their platform as long as there is a large audience. Yesterday, GM’s Rick Wagonner was keynote speaker at the huge Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
As he was interviewed on and on by Bloomberg in an obvious plug for GM, he didn’t once by my count speak of consumer electronics. Instead, he talked about the cars GM plans to build 10 and 20 years from now, and how he intends to compete against Toyota.
If the Consumer Electronics Show were mine to run, I’d have politely reminded Mr. Wagoner that the show isn’t about him. After all, he’s not likely to be around long. GM has dropped to a low of $22.87 on Jan-4 from a high of $43.20 on October 12. During that time, traders were misled by Mr. Wagoner as to sales and profits. He doesn’t deserve to be supported in any way.
The Daily RSI-7 has fallen to 9.8 and the Weekly is at 24.3. After the Monthly RSI-7 (34.7) sinks below 30, GM will have dropped into the Accumulation Zone. The last Distribution Zone, btw, occurred in Dec 2003 at over $50. The one before that was April 2000 at about $90.
I finally gave up on both GM and F in 2004 or 2005, when it became apparent to me that the management would not hesitate to misled traders and that they were in cahoots with Financial Entertainment TV. Sometimes competition does that to people. Unfortunately.
