Losing sectors were Basic Materials (XLB –1.37 pct) and Industrials (XLI -1.25 pct) in the lead and Tech (XLK –0.88 pct) close behind.

Tech fell back after UBS downgraded IBM (IBM) and Network Appliances (NTAP) from Buy to Neutral.

Starbucks (SBUX) announced some major changes in management with chairman Howard Schultz returning as CEO, but the play of the day was McDonalds (MCD) announcing they were adding “baristas” to the menu in the US to tap some coffee revenue from Starbucks.

The Retailers ($RLX +0.74 pct to 381.66) are starting to report December and 4Q07 revenues and earnings. Circuit City (CC) announced same-store sales fell -11.4 pct in December. The stock which had traded as low as 3.61 on Friday, hit a low of 3.81 before closing the session at 4.21. CC had a high of 22.02 in Feb-07 and was trading as high as 15 in July when US retailer woes began.

Despite concerns about the loss of two US military planes in the Persian Gulf, the Crude Oil contracts ($WTIC) dropped -2.82/bbl (-2.88 pct) to 95.09/bbl.

The trade-weighted $USD index added +0.45 pct to 76.16, which helped pull back the $GOLD price -3.70/oz (-0.43 pct) to 862.00.

Early this morning, the gold price is up about +11 to +13 however, and the USD is down against the Euro (1.4712). Silver is very strong (+2.0 pct) to about 15.58. Crude Oil Feb e-miNY’s are up +1.16 to 96.25. March DJ futures are up +32, indicating a firm open.

Comments & Outlook

The President, Treasury Secretary and most Fed heads are out in full force this week to try to pump the markets one more time. There is a lot of talk about a 50 basis point drop in the Fed Rate to be announced January 30.

Traders are responding with talk of Crude Oil at $200/bbl.

Whatever the Admin and Fed does at this point to aggressively manage the ills of the economy (that the President refuses to admit to), it can only lead to a weaker dollar and higher commodity prices, which means more price inflation and harm to the economy.

Traders on the Bull side are, I think, fed up. Mom and Pop ought to be distressed as well when they look at the performance of their pension and mutual funds in the past two and three quarters.

When Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs opine that their top picks for 2008 are AT&T (T) and Altria (MO) you have to know that DEFENSE DEFENSE is a chant we don’t have to wait until Super Bowl to be shouting. So when the President smiles into the cameras and tells Mom & Pop all is well in America, I say, please, give me a break !!

In the Dow 30, JPM is off -22.3 pct from its 52-week high, PFE and MMM are down -16.2 pct, C -49.1 pct, AA -32.1 pct, GM -45.2 pct, HD -39.6 pct, GE -14.2 pct, AXP -25.1 pct, AIG -22.8 pct, BA -23.2 pct, CAT -21.0 pct, …

That’s quite a cross-section of America.
