Markets Re-cap
The Wednesday session in NY was a volatile, heavy-volume one. Tech and commodity-related stocks were the losers and Financials and Retailers the winners.
The DJIA (-34.95), S&P 500 (-7.75), and Nasdaq Composite (-23.00) finished down, and oil and gold futures pulled back sharply.
On the economic front, the US CPI for December rose +0.3 pct, which meant that 2007 was the fastest rate of price increases in 17 years. Core CPI rose +0.2 pct.
Net foreign capital inflows in November surged +62 pct to $149.9 billion, which is the highest level since the start of 2006.
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) 4Q net income fell -34 pct to $2.97 billion vs $4.52 billion a year earlier, due to write-downs of sub-prime holdings, increased reserves against bad loans and higher credit costs. The stock gained +5.8 pct on the day, however.
In another reversal of fortune, Intel (INTC) reported 4Q net income soared +51 pct to $2.27 billion vs $1.5 billion a year earlier, on record sales of microprocessors and chip sets. However, the company suggested that 2008 does not look so promising and the stock tanked -12.4 pct.
On the deals front, Oracle (ORCL +2.9 pct) will acquire BEA Systems (BEAS +18.5 pct) for $7.85 billion or $19.375 a share in cash.
Crude Oil ($WTIC) finished down $1.37/bbl to $90.36 after the Department of Energy report showed a larger than expected build in inventories.
Treasury prices dropped a lot with the 30-year US Treasury falling -0.29 pct and yields rallying +0.65 pct to 4.32 pct.
The $USD surged +0.83 pct to close at 76.29. That action took $GOLD sharply down 20.60/oz to 882.00.
During the day, after the Asian-Pacific stocks had been hammered down, the European bourses also ended down; the FTSE 100 dropped -1.4 pct and the DAX -1.3 pct.
Early today, the Asia-Pacific markets were mixed with the Nikkei 225 (+2.1 pct) and Hang Seng (+2.7 pct) indexes up sharply, but many of the others like Shanghai (-2.6 pct) and India (-0.8 pct) down about the same. The European bourses FTSE (+0.3 pct), DAX (+0.6 pct) and CAC (+0.4 pct) were all up at 6:15am ET.
At 6:17am ET, spot Gold is side-tracking at 881.82, and spot Silver is doing much the same at 15.84. The March Euro contracts are trading down -0.0038 to 1.4616. Crude Oil Feb contracts are up +0.31 to 91.15. DJIA and Nasdaq futures are up +35 and +11 respectively, indicating a firm open.
But there is US Housing starts data to be reported today. So, traders will have to stay tuned.
Comments & Outlook
Yesterday, I had a belief that the Financials might turn stronger and they did. By the end of the day, the XLF was up +1.68 pct. That resulted in a net loss YTD of -4.2 pct.
Compare XLF to the Energy (XLE) and Tech (XLK) sectors, which are down -10.1 pct and -9.2 pct YTD. And, with yesterday’s smack down of INTC (-12.4 pct), the Semi-conductors (SMH) are now down -11.0 pct YTD. With AAPL (-5.6 pct) and GOOG (-3.4 pct) also getting hit yesterday, the Tech sector is looking ragged. Somebody has said, “It’s the economy, stupid”.
Shanghai Fly added to his note of yesterday: “In the past, Shanghai would bounce and quickly cover the gap down after a reserve requirement hike or interest rate hike. Today it attempted to do so but weakened drastically afterwards. It is attempting to hold the 50 day MA, further risk on the downside.”
What I see happening here is that traders are worried more about the slowdown in the economy. They expect that the stimulus programs being discussed by governments and central bankers are most likely to help HB&B, but there may be enough help to the consumer with energy costs coming down that previous shorts in the Retailers are being closed.
Re the Retailers ($RLX +2.52 pct on the day), two of the top advancers yesterday were JC Penny (JCP +6.6 pct) and Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY +4.0 pct).
Is this enough to stem the losses of those Bulls who continue to believe the major market indexes are still rising? I don’t think so. I am watching to see how far each sector/industry group rally can go before it fizzles. Yesterday, for example, as I perceived a rally in the Financials about to happen, I suggested that writing short puts in HSBC (HBC 74.46 -1.90 pct) might be opportune (but risky if you don’t want to hold the stock at 70) and that was looking like a good entry point as the stock was falling below 74 to a low on the day of 73.75. The point is that I was only looking for a move back to possibly 79 in the near term, but enough (while the day before that most everybody was expecting a crash) to result in 100 pct earned income of the option premiums.
One of my confidence boosters is watching the number of Buy Alerts increase, which did happen yesterday, which you can see from the tables below.
All I am trying to do here is expose some of you to how Bear markets can be managed for extra income. In any case, I do believe the next pull-back will take the DJIA down to about 12000, and that oil and gold are also headed lower, for now.
