Markets Re-cap
The headlines screamed: “Bloodied after Bernanke” and “Bernanke sends Goldilocks running.” But was it really Prof. Bernanke’s fault?
Don’t you think Merrill Lynch’s shocking SIV/CDO write-downs and 4Q loss was the biggest negative yesterday? Isn’t the issue now that Northern Rock, Countrywide, UBS, Citigroup, Merrill and how many other banks to follow are massively cutting and slashing, which can’t be good for the economy, and that is what concerns wealth managers?
Bernanke was there yesterday trying to tell those who would listen that he was going to help and that he would support legislative efforts for stimulus packages. He also said it would take many months for these changes to work through the economy. Were traders expecting magic?
If banks are going to tighten, what chance is there that energy and metals prices are going to lift? It would be a first for me if that were to happen.
On a very bad day for the Bulls, the three biggest losers were the Financials (XLF -5.08 pct), Basic Materials (XLB -4.94 pct), and Energy (XLE -3.78 pct). The Dow Utilities were down -3.73 pct and XLU -3.86 pct.
At the end of a long day, the DJIA dropped -2.46 pct to 12159, a loss of -307 points. The range was a very volatile 12,125.56 - 12,517.61. The S&P 500 dropped -2.91 pct to 1333.25 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped -1.99 pct to 2346.90. The Russell 2000 small caps dropped -2.76 pct to 680.57.
For industries, it was the Chemicals (-5.8 pct) and Broker-Dealers (-5.5 pct) that led the rout. But the action was widespread. Only the Biotechs, barely, made a gain, and the Retailers (-0.69 pct) looked not too bad.
Merrill Lynch got the day rolling south by reporting $14.6 billion in losses related mostly to sub-prime mortgages, which led to a 4Q net loss of $9.83 billion vs net income of $2.3 billion a year earlier.
Then more bad economic data. Housing starts fell -14.2 pct, to the lowest level in 16 years. The January Philly Fed manufacturing index plunged to -20.9.
Bond yields dropped (-1.55 pct to 4.253 pct for the 30-year) and Bond prices rallied (+0.76 pct to 119.38 for the 30-year US Bond). Crude Oil ($WTIC) closed down 0.79/bbl to 89.57. $GOLD dropped -1.50/oz to 880.50, and even the $USD lost ground, closing down -0.07 to 76.22.
None of the usual market relationships worked out, but then yesterday wasn’t a normal one. Traders were just in the mood to sell.
But every day is a new one. Today, in Asia-Pacific equity markets, except for Australia (-1.0 pct) and India (-3.5 pct), most indexes were up: Nikkei (+0.6 pct), Shanghai (+0.6 pct), Hong Kong (+0.4 pct) and Singapore (+1.1 pct).
In the European bourses, at 6:20am ET, the FTSE (+1.2 pct), DAX (+0.1 pct) and CAC (+0.04 pct) were all positive with positive-looking GE and IBM in their crosshairs.
The March Crude Oil contracts are up +0.325/bbl to 90.325.
The Euro is US$1.46.18, down sharply (-0.34 pct) against the $USD.
Spot gold is down -1.04/oz since midnight at 874.30.
The DJIA March futures are up by double digits (+104) to 12320.
Comments & Outlook
Options expiry. The President speaking. Two Fed heads speaking. Market over-sold. Cramer whining…
As the day closed yesterday, what did this picture look like? I’d say it was Howdy Doody Time… I mean, it’s rally time.
When I went to bed last night, all the talk was of doom and gloom, but I knew in my bones today would be different. General Electric (GE), whose chairman and CEO sits on the Board of the NY Fed along with his peers from Goldman Sachs and Lehman Bros, would be reporting. When was the last time Jeff Immelt reported a single negative thing? Contrast that of course with GE’s price performance during recent years.
This morning I turned on the Bloomberg, expecting to see an “attitude adjustment” let’s call it, and why am I not shocked that of the first 15 items (I counted !!), ten were positive, one was negative and 4 were neutral news items that I call filler the mainstream media uses so the whole picture looks balanced, ie not so easily noticed that it is not.
So rally it is I figured (and I hadn’t even yet looked at the futures !!). Yes, Friday rally … until maybe 2pm. The final two hours of week will be crucial.
It’s usually important, but this isn’t just any week. The DJIA has fallen -447 points (-3.6 pct) in just four days. The interventionists simply cannot let the public go home for the weekend talking about losses in their retirement plans as well as the falling equity in their homes. After all, this is America, the most desirable… and all that hooey.
That -447 Dow point decline has been hard on Goldilocks. But then again, Goldilocks is a corpse. You knew she died last year. I told you that in WIR #50 Dec 15…
I won’t sugarcoat this: Goldilocks died. Inflation is surging in the US for both producers (PPI) and consumers (CPI), which has brought an end to the 2002-2007 Bull market. The market topped out in October. From that point, global equity markets will experience a series of lower lows and lower highs, which is the definition of a Bear market.
Do you recall? Well, since that week-end in mid-December, the DJIA is down -8.9 pct and the Nasdaq Composite is down -10.9 pct.
So, rally time. In fact, I’ll go further and say that yesterday’s winners (Consumer Staples, Retailers and Healthcare) will be today’s laggards. The losers yesterday (Financials, Oil and Materials, along with Tech) will be today’s winners. The public will be whip-sawed, left bewildered, thinking that trading is so complex they need to rely on their HB&B advisor to help them out… (LOL)
But, let’s see what the Bulls at HB&B have left after they throw all but the kitchen sink at the market this morning, trying to close your shorts. They don’t want you there because that’s the space they want to occupy. After all, a profitable billion here, a billion there… it all adds up.
We’re talking about banks that don’t seem to blink when they write-off a billion here, a billion there. Well maybe ten billion here and there, which is my point… these people have to make it somewhere.
And, they say, if you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere !!
