Daily Report for Fri, Jan 11, 2008
Markets Re-cap
Once again, yesterday’s trading resulted in a sell-off in Europe (FTSE -0.52 pct, DAX -0.89 pct and CAC -0.64 pct) followed by a late day rally in US equity markets.
Yesterday it was the vision of Fed rate cuts that set off the market again (DJIA +0.92 pct, Nasdaq Composite +0.56 pct and S&P 500 +0.79 pct).
The talk of rate cuts came from Fed chairman Ben Bernanke, which is the horse’s mouth, so traders took that to the bank. The rationale is that the global economy is now on the downslide (meaning heading toward global recession) or serious slowdown from its recent rapid growth.
Perhaps the spark came around 2:00pm ET, with the Dow 30 underwater by some -20 points, when the rumor hit that Bank of America is in talks to purchase the beleaguered home mortgage lender Countrywide Financial (CFC), which then rocketed that stock from about $5.00 to a daily high of $8.91 a couple minutes later as the shorts ran to cover.
In addition there were formal merger talks for airline consolidation that occurred as oil prices were pulling back.
The good news overwhelmed the earlier bad reports of very weak December sales by most US retailers and by the report from American Express (AXP) that it will take a $440 million pretax charge against earnings following a recent slowdown in cardholder spending and a rise in delinquencies.
On the economics front, the US Commerce Department reported that November wholesalers' inventories outpaced expectations, rising +0.6 pct in November, which is a bad sign. Sales in November by the US wholesalers did jump to the highest level in 2 years, up +2.2 pct.
Citigroup (C) raised up to $10 billion from foreign investors and Merrill Lynch (MER) was reported to be receiving a $3 to $4 billion cash infusion from a Middle Eastern government investment fund.
Previously, the USD appreciated against the British Pound (now being called the European Dollar for its recent anemic performance due to an economic slowdown there). Yesterday, however, the Pound gained +0.17 pct as the trade-weighted $USD fell -0.69 pct. The Yen closed flat, but the Euro (+1.01 pct) was strong, which helped $GOLD contracts move up +11.90/oz (+1.35 pct) to 893.60.
The strength in the Euro and Pound yesterday came after their central banks maintained their rates, despite calls for cuts. Those actions (or lack thereof) did, however cause sell-offs to equities.
Early today, most of the Asia-Pacific markets were weak, although India (+1.2 pct) and Shanghai (+0.5 pct) were up. The Nikkei 225 dropped -1.93 pct to 14,110. The Nikkei hit highs of about 18,300 in February, June and July, which is a loss of -22.9 pct from repeated highs for this important index.
In the European bourses, the DAX is flat, but the others are down (FTSE -0.68 pct and CAC -0.36 pct) at 6:33am ET.
Presently (6:35am ET), the spot gold is down -2.44 to 893.05. Spot silver is down -0.08 to 16.16. The March Euro/USD contract is down -0.11 pct to 1.4775.
Also the Feb e-miNY Crude Oil is down -0.27 to 92.94. Bonds are up marginally as yields are off.
US equity markets are looking like a down open. The March DJ futures are down -71.
Comments & Outlook
The airline stocks bounced off extreme lows (Dow Transports and Airline indexes M-W-D RSI-7 clearly in the Accumulation Zone awaiting a Buy Alert), which resulted when share prices were sent sharply higher after (i) Crude Oil ($WTIC) dropped -2.02/bbl to 93.21, (ii) Bernanke almost promised rate cuts shortly in a speech yesterday, and (iii) Delta Airlines directors were discussing potential mergers with UAL and Northwest Airlines.
These indexes have been down over -40 pct since mid-Oct. The $XAL (Airline index), for example, hit a high of 48.34 on Oct-8 and a low two days ago of just 27.68, which is a drop of -42.7 pct. That is a major Bear market move in three months. Cost inflation, a slowing economy, and general market weakness combined to hammer these airline stocks.
There will be volatility here unless and until the price trend shows a clear cut cross-over of the falling MA lines. But, if there is to be any kind of broad market rally, I believe that the oil price is the key. Oil prices affect not only the important transports, but also the consumer, who travels less to the shopping malls, and the new homes investor who has to consider the cost of moving further distances between their jobs and less costly new home remote suburban developments.
So the oil price will be a key to market trends and cycles, and the tell will be the transports, including the airlines.
Increasingly, however, the market is being driven by rumor, which is typical at major trend junctures as the scoundrels in markets are dumping stock. So, it is rather difficult at these times to separate the walk from the talk. Particularly hard hit will be traders who set close stops.
For this reason, I say that the markets today are really killing fields for day traders.
