Daily Report for Fri, Dec 21, 2007
Markets Re-cap
On Thursday, the DJIA (+38.37), S&P 500 (+7.12), and Nasdaq Composite (+39.85) closed the day stronger. As I reported yesterday morning, it would be an Oracle kind of day, and ORCL showed that this blog’s crystal ball was in working order, somewhere between the natural and the spiritual world, as usual.
Basic Materials (XLB +1.84 pct), Technology (XLK +1.44 pct) and Energy (XLE +1.27 pct) were the leaders, while Financials (XLF -0.72 pct) and Consumer Staples (XLP -0.45 pct) held the indexes down.
Airlines, banks, retailers, and pharmaceuticals were the weakest industry groups, while the chemicals and computer hardware were strongest.
The US economy, however, is sagging. Jobless claims lifted again, and more than expected, which is a worrying sign for months ahead. The rise in jobless claims is an indication that the labor market continues to soften.
The final tally for the 3Q US GDP remained unrevised at +4.9 pct, which is a shocker given that housing industry downturn and the resultant impact on manufacturing and transportation.
Knobias reported that outstanding commercial paper fell a steep -$54.7 billion this week, and total outstanding ABS commercial paper declined -$27.5 billion.
On the earnings front, Bear Stearns (BSC) posted its first quarterly loss in its 84 year history (22 as a public company) losing -$854 million, or $6.90 a share vs net income of $563 million, or $4 a share in the prior year period. CDO write-downs of $1.9 billion caused the loss.
As noted yesterday, Oracle Corp (ORCL) posted a +35% rise in fiscal 2Q net income to $1.3 billion vs $967 million a year earlier.
Crude Oil made early gains but finished flat following speculation that heating oil demand will decline in a softening economy. Near Futures are down about 15 cents at this point.
The $USD gained against the Euro, which softened gold and silver prices a bit. This morning, it is weaker. Treasury Yields are higher and bond prices lower this morning as capital is moving out of fixed-income into equities. US equity futures appear to be stronger by about +0.75 pct, indicating a strong open.
Early today, the Asia-Pacific equity markets all closed higher and that is the same color of green across all the bourses of Europe in mid-session as this point.
Spot gold and silver are presently (8:48am ET) sharply higher at +8.51 to 808.59 and +0.22 to 14.43, respectively. Spot plat and pall are flat to slightly negative to this point.
Comments & Outlook
Moves by the major central banks of the world to flood the banking system with a trillion or more dollars in recent weeks have clearly helped the bankers. But, I ask, what about the economy and housing industry mess in these countries.
Bankers are getting theirs, but the so-called wealth effect is working in reverse. Housing prices are falling. Inflation is rising. Unemployment will soon start to rise. Government budgets are ballooning.
With all this new capital being injected into HB&B, has mortgage costs dropped, have credit card rates fallen, are there new “Open for business” signs in bankers windows?
No, what is happening is that holes in the leaking dike are being plugged. Monies from the public sector are being used to buy time for the bankers to write off all the worthless investment paper they are holding. And if its not a loan from a central bank, its an equity ‘infusion’ by a Sovereign Wealth Fund.
Are you now wondering why Humungous Bank & Broker was so busy in the past year buying mega billions of dollars worth of its own stock at a time when prices were at their highest levels? Well I told you at the time, didn’t I? I told you it was using the shareholders’ treasury to buy the shares of Friends & Family to provide them with the funds they would need to return to the market at the bottom of the Bear to buy back those shares and much more. I called it, among other things, orchestrated fraud and the greatest transfer of wealth from the average shareholder to HB&B Friends & Family in the history of the world.
Now, in the midst of having to write off the crap these bankers knew back then they were holding, and having to go hat in hand to governments for bail-outs, their share prices have fallen on bad times. Surprise! Surprise! Like a bullet in the forehead, I gave it to you straight when it was going down. All that needs to be done now to complete this sad script is for the Bear to sink the markets and then Friends and Family will pull their capital out of T-Bills and Gold and buy up what’s left remaining from the Bear’s lunch.
Little by little, we are catching on to their tricks, aren’t we?
Traders: at this point, it’s the economy, stupid. For share prices to rise, corporate earnings must rise in absolute dollars, not on a per-share basis. To look at per-share earnings in the midst of the most massive share buy-backs in history is like accepting a 3 pct annual raise from your employer when you know the cost of living has risen double that.
Today is a Triple Witching Day. Share prices will be confused because it is the end of the Quarter where (i) stock options (ii) stock index options and (iii) stock index futures, must be settled, and the gains and losses either taken, written off or rolled over. Prices in the afternoon can get volatile.
After this afternoon, and possibly late in the session, we are likely to see how soon the Bear returns.
