Cara's Daily Report and Commentary, Wed., Nov 7, 2007
Yesterday, the USD hit a new all-time low against the euro, and precious metals prices soared. The public is starting to take notice that America is presently leadership-challenged, and is pouring millions daily into the coffers of poll laggard Republican presidential hopeful Dr. Ron Paul who appears to be a Man for the Times.
The Dow (+117.54), S&P (+18.10), and Nasdaq (+30.00) rallied late in the face of surging commodity prices. Crude Oil December eMiNY contracts closed at $96.70, up +2.72/bbl (+2.89 pct) and $GOLD futures closed at $823.40, up 12.60 (+1.55 pct). The Canadian Dollar is no longer a Loonie; it’s almost a Toonie, closing at $1.0841 American (+1.21 pct).
The trade-weighted $USD closed at a record low of 76.04, while the Euro closed at a record high of 145.56 (+0.60 pct). The British Pound closed at a record high 208.70 (+0.32 pct), while the Yen dropped a little to close at 87.36.
On the earnings front, IndyMac Bancorp (IMB) posted a 3Q net loss of $202.7 million vs a net income of $86.2 million a year earlier, due to a $575 million pretax credit-related charge in addition to bad loans. Nortel Networks (NT) moved to a profit of $27 million vs a year-earlier net loss of $63 million, due to higher profit margins. Molson Coors Brewing (TAP) 3Q net income dropped -0.8 pct to $134.7 million from $135.8 million a year earlier, due to charges related to combining its US and Puerto Rican operations with those of SABMiller PLC. Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) reported 1Q net income rose +9.4 pct to $441 million vs $403 million a year earlier, on higher prices for sweeteners, starches and oilseed products. Lear Corp (LEA) moved to a 3Q net profit of $41 million from a net loss of $74 million a year ago, mostly due to lower costs. Tenet Healthcare (THC) 3Q net loss dropped to $59 million vs a net loss of $89 million a year earlier, as more insured patients were admitted.
Crude Oil prices closed back up over $96/bbl as traders priced in a likely draw in inventories in today's Department of Energy report. XLE, the major Energy sector EFT, jumped +3.34 pct on the day, closing at 77.75.
In second place was XLB, the Basic Materials sector ETF, which gained +2.34 pct to close at 43.21. The Philly Goldminers Index ($XAU) was the winning industry for the day, up +3.52 pct.
The sector laggard was Utilities (XLU), up just 4 cents (+0.09 pct) to close at 42.42. The Dow Utilities ($UTIL) dropped -0.07 pct). Airlines ($XAL) dropped -2.86 pct), although Transports ($TRANQ) closed up +1.78 pct.
US Treasury yields lifted from +2.8 to +3.9 basis points on the late day equity rally, and the 30-year Treasury Bond closed down -0.38 pct to 113.81, yielding 4.652 pct. The 10-year yield closed at +4.357 pct.
In foreign stock ETF’s trading in NY in USD, the winners on the day were BIG WINNERS. South Korea (EWY +5.48 pct), Hong Kong (EWH +5.42 pct) and Brazil (EWZ +4.36 pct) made stunning gains, apparently being used to hedge USD losses.
At almost 6:30am ET, the London FTSE 100 index is down -0.9 pct and european bourses looking weak. In Asia-Pacific markets, India and Tokyo were down almost -1.0 pct, while Shanghai, Hong Kong and Sydney were up a similar amount.
Today, traders will be looking at the Cisco (CSCO) report, and of course the $USD, oil and gold. A few minutes ago Dec Oil hit 98.60 and is presently 98.125. Spot gold hit a high of 845.60 and is presently at 843.3. The problem here is that the $USD has fallen to a low of 75.21, presently at 75.375. One year ago, it was 85.70.
